Where do you buy most of your books?

Although I had to snicker at the last option, I can't find the best answer to your question. I buy from off-amazon websites, used book stores, garage sales, and library sales. I guess you need might amend the used bookstore option to incude other legitimate non-retail sources, and add a place for "YES! All of the above."

How is it that I love to read but rarely buy books? I can't afford to! Third kid in college and one more to go - you know how that goes (along with any extra income). Seriously though, I get most of my books from the local library. I never have any problems. I renew online. I reserve. Occasionally I'll buy - but only from Amazon. A confession - the only books that I buy for myself are cookbooks. I have over 100, maybe over 150.
So - for me - I'd have to say that, no, I don't buy books.

I don't have the patience to wait for books to be shipped from online even if they're cheaper and I don't have the $$ to buy them new from Barnes and Nobles everytime. So usually I head down to my local Half Price Books or any other used bookstore. I just went to the library sale yesterday and got three fantasy books for $1.50. ((oops, almost typed $150 )) I love cheap books. Especially HPB's dollar rack.

I'd wager that the confusion has something to do with me creating a Jodi Picoult thread. I checked out one of her books, and subsequently posted about it here. I realized my error after reading the first six pages. I never went further.

I buy more and more at used bookstores,
although I have been wondering whether it really is a bargain, as I tend to let myself go and buy more books because they cost only half as much . When I buy at a regular bookstore, I take only the book(s) I really fancy to keep expenses as low as possible . I order from Amazon about 3 times a year the books I cannot find at the local bookstores.

Well I just started working in a bookstore and I get 35% off books, so I'm pretty much emptying thier shelves at the moment and getting books from there. I'm not an internet-book-buyer. I prefer going to shops and picking out books. Although waiting for a book in the mail sure does sound like fun

About 4/5th's of the time I get books at used bookstores, there are about ten of them within walking distance, and I like going into a store with no preconceptions of what I want to buy, and having something old and obscure just jump out at me. Occasionally when I want something specific, I'll order it in through a local bookstore, but only after checking every used bookstore. I saved myself a couple hundred dollars this semester by getting my reading lists early and trying used stores first...

I'm fond of half.com and overstock-when I can get their search engine to locate the book I want..they really need to change that. The main reason I like them is that I can use Bill Me Later and have the books sent pronto, as if I'd paid with a credit card. I'd be happier with half.com if they'd allow customers to use paypal like we can with ebay. Seems odd we can't, since they're connected anyway.

I use Amazon for new hardbacks, as they've got the biggest discount usually. New paperbacks I get at my local Books a Million. And if I'm looking for an old title I'll use Powells.com, Amazon Marketplace, or ebay. I also have a great local used bookstore that I can find newer used stuff as well. Shopping online is the cheapest for me as the sales tax rate where I live is 9.5%.

Generally from work but since I have quit that won't be so much longer. I work(ed) at Canada's largest book chain. There is a good second hand book store in a neighbouring city and a couple good independents not far. It will be good for my conscience to be buying from an independent but more difficult on my wallet without my employee discount.
