Why do we like collecting books?

I can see this, one of the first things I do when in someone's house for the first time is scan the room to see what, if any books they have. It has a practical reason for me as well because I am often on the shy side and if there's books present I can start off talking about them. I often collect books that I wish to share with others, I lend a lot of mine out or give them to friends/family. I also just like having them around, knowing that at any given time I can go to my shelves and find some lovely to read.

I think this started for me when I was very young and my best friend's parents (mentors of mine) had an amazing library which extended up three stories in their home. Thev'e since past but the books remind me of what wonderful people they were.
 
drm has an excellent point. There were books that I enjoyed in college that completely changed the way I looked at the world and viewed things around me. I look at those now with almost religious reverence. In teaching, I've tried to pass along the same works to those who were natural bookworms or who were interested in history. It is great to have others see what influenced you, but it's also great to see a spark in a student's mind the first time they read a Noam Chomsky book or something else that just blows them away.

But it doesn't stick around long enough, I'm a tad slow and usually don't notice my mistakes until it's too late :eek: :eek: :rolleyes:

Then maybe we can ask Darren to make the button stick around longer. How long would be reasonable?
 
Well I think it's at 15 minutes now, which really allows for enough time to view and correct. I just need to start looking at post right after it is posted, I guess. I understand why they gave the time limit and agree that it has it's value.
 
Don't know :confused: but I will have to live to about 104 to read all mine :eek: mmm perhaps I can take some with me :rolleyes:
 
yes.. my reasoning is that by the time i am really old, i'll have all these books i don't remember reading, and can enjoy them all again! :D

it's another excuse for being a collector...
 
I think that alot of people collect books because they are impressive looking on a bookshelf. I'm not saying that I'm not one of them, I love the fact that I have such a vast collection of classic novels but I also buy books based on the feel I get reading the back of them and the first couple of pages.
