when you say electronica, or techno, most people think of that music...like...err... umph umph umph over and over again. there is actually some great techno, dance, and electronica music out there. people like dj mangoo, dj melodie, basshunter, tokyo ghetto pussy (pussycats), and future trance united are making great music.

ill post the links as soon as i can (darn 15 post rule)

There is some techno that is pretty good. I look forward to your posts.
As for the 15 post rule, patience is avirtue:) (At least that is what I have heard.lol)

I can'ts get enough of me synthrock/futurepop. I'm not so much of a fan of mainstream electronica/trance because a lot of it is just generic beats to me, but I like a lot of the aforementioned synth stuff mainly thanks to my flatmate and a couple of the goth nights I attend. Its just a matter of taste and mood for me really.

If you haven't heard of them already, you may like Apoptygma Berzerk.

I'm not a big fan of this type of music. I prefer music with real live instruments on a stage in front of crowds of people.

I can understand the desire to see musicians, especially those that are masters on their instruments, performing. Two of my favorite bands are Yes and Rush, who both have employed excellent musicians. Also, it takes a lot of talent to be able to play an instrument and write songs as well. I have a huge amount of respect for those that do. However, I have found myself over the last 5 years really getting into electronica.

Now mind you, I prefer the instrumental stuff, and I am not so much into techno. I would say that my favorite sub-genre is IDM, and also find myself liking a lot of ambient styled stuff, so long as it isn't so mellow that it's just a couple quiet sounds droning on for what seems like hours. Bola and Kiln are two of my favorite IDM styled artists.

I would also plug Tangerine Dream. They have done such a wide range of stuff it's amazing. I started getting into them in the early 90's and a lot of their material from that time was too new age like for me, but their earlier stuff was incredible (withe some not incredible stuff, too). But the samples of the last couple of albums I have heard I have liked.

While i have great respect for their ability as musicians, i really dont have respect for the music they have made. Seems more focused on making them look clever and showing off their ability to play instruments rather than making good songs.

I totally agree with you. When I tell people I like electronica/trance they always jump to the conclusion that it is just a bunch of electronic noises thrown together. However, when I play some trance music to them they understand why I LOVE TRANCE so much.

I just recently got into electronica and I've realized that there are a lot of different kinds. I had it up on Pandora one day and my husband was horrified, but I stuck to my guns and he backed off. I think there is something to like in all genres of music.

Awesome topic. I think a lot of the problem is most people are conservative listeners. I'm a huge audiophile, and like a little bit of everything. I must say that my robot ears have become more attuned to experimental/instrumental/IDM. I've been getting into DnB & Dubstep a lot recently, but you can bet your golden knickers I've got some sort of electronica/house in EVERY playlist. I think what i like most about this genre is that it's so versatile.

I think scooter really hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned.

Oh my friend, electronica is just as good live as any of your other genres!

I've attended some wicked shows (& a fair amount of raves) that left me more impressed with their beats than many of the alt-rock, post-rock, hip-hop concerts I've been to.
