Why Join an Online Forum?

I love reading and that is why I am here.I have also learned alot and have read alot of books that I would not otherwise have picked up on my own.In my area there is no Book Club so this was the alternative,as to peoples opinions,it's very easy to take something the wrong way, but I have not encountered (yet) a situation that would turn me off the forums.

Saying your opinion of a book is what a discussion forum is about and if someone agrees (or disagrees) then they do have a right to say so.It is also the manner that they say it in but here again you have a choice to analyse their opinion and then make up your own mind.

Some people have strong opinions about certain books/authors etc,that's when acceptance comes in from one member to another,or you can just ignore them.:lol:

I don't care personally what others think of my reading choices.:D

Moderators accept opinions but not insults.Being "abrassive" and "abrupt" in a response is just how some people are.You can ignore it or analyse it.

I'm not sure there is anything to dissect. It sounded to me like we were already in substantial agreement. And that is the way I would indeed prefer to leave it -- in agreement.

Great,but if you have any suggestions for the moderators as to what they could do different (or not),please say so in the Suggestion Thread.
 
- It's hard enough to find a reading group. It's not as popular a hobby as 50 years ago. When you do, you'll find that the sheer no of books around mean that you may find it difficult to find readers who share the same taste in books. The net just puts you in contact with a greater no of people from all over the place.

- Some people have very busy jobs etc. The fact you can drop in and post rather than having to spend time travelling to and from a group meeting which has to be at a specific time of the day/night. You just have to access the web and post a message up. In a similar vein - you could just casually post to kill 5 mins whilst you're waiting for something- why do you think facebook is so popular?

- People from different parts of the world do bring different perspectives to books eg SF in the UK is very different to that in the US.

- Yes to miss direct person to person interaction but that does allow some of those with an introverted way of interacting (ie those that think before they speak as a pose to those who speak before they think - doesn't mean shy) to shine

- Have you had that feeling 20 mins after a conversation where you get the lightbulb moment and the feeling 'nuts I should have said that as well?' You can act on that on online forums.

That's an excellent point.
Also, when you get that brainstorm at 3 in the morning, you can vent it on a forum. You won't wake anyone up! :cool:
