Your favourite bookshop / place to buy books

Barnes and Noble! Because I work there and get a great discount! And Half Price books. There are a lot of rare finds and great prices. :D

I love the big stores where i can sit and drink and spend alot of time.Barnes and Noble is where i go and shop the most since it's very close to my place.I do shop at Amazon as well.

The best place is Amazon.com because the books are usually 30%+ cheaper than my local stores. I greatly appreciate the price reductions, as I only buy hardcovers, saving me loads of money. Always, I will spend over twenty-five dollars, so I get free shipping as well. Some may not like to wait, but I usually order my books a few days ahead of time, so the books arrive exactly when I need them.

Ellison H bookshop. There's a guy there and he's the only person on earth who can pick books for me in my absence! I had a hysterectomy and was couch bound for a fortnight and he'd send 5 or 6 books a week for me to read without failing once!

Dymocks is good. You get points and discounts off other books.

I find the local bookstores here in Hobart just too expensive; Ellison Hawker, Dymocks, Angus & Robertson. A shame as you want specialist bookstores to thrive, but if you read 2 or 3 books a week it can get pretty expensive.

So I generally buy newer popular titles from Big W or K-Mart and most other books online from amazon, bookcloseouts, QBD or paperchain.

Occasionally you can pick up some great books on sale at angus & robertson, so I check there every couple of weeks.

To just hang around and read, I prefer a big bookstore with comfy chairs, like Books A Million. But to actually buy books, I like used bookstores like McKays because it's cheaper.

I'm gratified to see the number of posters who buy from my beloved employers, Tesco. Thank you for doing your bit to pay my wages :D .

I get a 10% staff discount so £3.73 comes down to £3.36. My problem is the unpredictability of what will be stocked in each branch. I guess my tastes can't be that mainstream, since we stock little that I want to buy.

I mainly buy paperbacks, so when an author I like has a new hardback published the paperback goes on my Amazon wish list waiting for the publication date. They're where I do most of my shopping for new books.

I have a weakness for 3 for 2s too; the best selection of those seems to be at Waterstone's, but Borders is best for browsing. I have a local Ottakars but don't buy much there, I mainly use the big branches of the chains up in the West End.

For 2nd hand, if the weather's good when I'm in town I often stop by the stalls outside the National Film Theatre under Waterloo Bridge, although they're getting pretty expensive.

I used to swap old books for new at the Book Exchange in Notting Hill but the staff are notoriously snotty and getting a bit choosy about what they'll take so most goes to my local Oxfam shop or friends these days.

My favourite place is the Red Cross Book Shop in Palmers Green, North London - think large bookshop such as Ottakars but with second hand books at second hand prices. The books are even categorised into genres and then stacked alphabetically. They also have an extensive non-fiction section and several shelves of first editions, helpfully marked 'first editions'. A lot of the books on sale here are still in the book charts in the likes of WHSmiths etc.
Have to check this out, not far from where I live.

I shop the sales tables at the local bookstore. My favorite place to buy books is from the sellers on Amazon.com. I usually get hardcover books for less then I'd pay for a paperback at the store.

I love browsing Barnes & Noble and Borders for the newer books but prefer to do the actual buying at an amazing gem I found called The Frugal Muse. It's a huge used bookstore that gets some new books (at a better discount) and has used books in great condition for the best prices. Yikes, I sound like an advert for them. I'm still in awe that I just bought 3 of the Griffin and Sabine books for less than $20, and they were all perfect.

We have this wonderful bookstore called the New England Bookfair. It is housed in this dirty old warehouse. I find it impossible to navigate, but that makes it fun. There is no place to sit and is always mobbed. They have EVERYTHING though and offer incredible discounts. All of the books are brand new. I save so much money there vs. if I were to go to a Barnes and Noble, Borders, or order online.

I love Hay on Wye, all the bookstores there are great and the staff are perfectly happy for you to spend hours browsing. I especially love the converted barns, with rows upon rows of dusty second hand books.

My favourite bookstore ever is a place in melbourne called Rendezvous The Romannce Bookstore. Its the only place I've ever been dedicated solely to romance books. I became a customer and am now running the UK site, but would still be a loyal follower anyway.

My number one place to buy books is Barnes & Noble; they are the nearest physical bookstore. If I'm looking for something new to read I prefer to pick up the book, read the back cover and scan through a few pages to get a better sense of whether I'd like it or not.

For authors I know and trust I'll buy from Amazon.com.

For books that are only available used I prefer abebooks.com. If I still lived in Minneapolis I would get my used books from Magers & Quinn - I loved that store.

In New Zealand we don't have book cafes.. well not that I've seen anyway. Our biggest bookstores would be Borders and Whitcoulls, but we have small ones like Paper Plus and Books and More as well. I generally buy my books online on a site called Trademe.. which is the NZ ebay. I find it to be way cheaper this way and I don't really mind having books second hand.. I'm a poor little student and I just make do with what I can get.

:D Love them all...Waterstone's,Ottakars,+Tesco's for Great prices :)

But my all time fav has to be 'Borders' (One near my Sister in Essex)its great for browsing esp in those Leather chairs sigh! Not to mention the StarBucks coffee shop where you sit above the books ..HEAVEN ON EARTH!

*drool* The Waterstone's in Picadilly is AMAZING. i could actually spend an entire day in there and not get bored. It has 6 floors, is open until ten has a café also. I love that place. Plus the trip to Central London makes for a nice day out even if it is spent in the bookshop. It's the first place i go on payday. :D

I'm going to put this image up onto my blog later today, but I want to share it here too. This is one of my very favourite places to buy books! I think it's probably unique in London! As you can see it's a fruit and vegetable shop that also sells second hand books. Many of them are only 99 pence. I love the combination of books and fruits! The scents and the colours mingling for my sight and sense of smell.
