Your Personal Library

Wow. Lots of books in this thread. :) I lost count when I passed 2000 books years ago. Most of mine are popular fiction. Suspense, drama, adventure and thrillers make up most of my library. I do have a small amount of science fiction and fantasy, but only the really good stuff.

Quality over quantity

I too am afraid to count but a just completed divorce is forcing a move and I'm quickly seeing over a 1000 just hardcovers! This past week-end was a Five College book sale and what a treasure trove I needed to negate the divorce somehow and books are the best!! I'm now reading "The Corrections" which is great and am also re-reading the short stories of Andre Dubus:D These are some of the best stories relating to everyday relations ; nobody captures the human spirit like this man has!
Now back to paxking and I'll keep counting. I have promised myself to finally organize and categorize my library.:)

I have over one hundred. pitiful compared to you all, though! anyhoo, money and space cut into that, which is why I am thankful for the library - my second home. nick_m100, I am insanely jealous of your shelves.

I think I have a good amount of romance and various fictions. a couple biographies, and some children's lit as well.

jealous?

So your jealous of my shelves as in you want to be a shelf, or you want the shelves and all the books? I got my book collecting... no, hoarding started when I found around 20 or 30 books in my garage, and thats when I found out my library sells used books for 10 cents each. Imagine their surprise when I came in and cleaned them out. :D Then the library book sale comes along and as stated above I only bought around 300 of my books and generally got the rest for free from random people and places.

well, while I'm not too shy to say I wouldn't mind being a book holding shelf, :p I'm just jealous of your many shelves. I have only acquired 2 plain bookshelves. when I finally get a home all my own I want shelves lining one entire wall - built in. :)

your library sells them for only ten cents? I have to pay twenty-five cents at mine, I ought to try to sway them.

I used to have a few hundred books from a couple of different genres, but when I moved, I ended up having to pack most of my books up and store them with a relative. I did take a large suit case full, and I have about forty or fifty right now... which isn't nearly enough. I just finished off the last of them and I'm craving something new.
I wish I could find a decent used bookstore somewhere nearby....

i have nowhere near as many too-150, but that's my own personal library and I'm 15. Plus, we have lots more books in our house in Minsk. But yeah, I use the library, I usually odn't buy books unless they're nonfiction or reference, or I love them very much.

how long?

150? How long have you been collecting? I have for around 3-4 months less than a year and I'm 15 but I spend all my money I get on books anywhere I find them and because of that I got several more just today and now have 621 books.
Good book collecting.

I have a lot of my books in boxes back in Australia, but I would guess that I have around 200. A lot of them are unread, even though I bought them years ago. If I see something I really like then I have to buy it, even though I know it will be a while before I get around to reading it.

268. Just counted! :) Including many kind of novels: "drama", crime, some horror, some fantasy, bit of sci-fi...also a bit poetry, some comics, books about history, mythology, sciences and random books related to several other topics. I'm fanaticly in love with my relatively small but growing collection! Sometimes I may just sit looking at my bookshelf for some time. Hahah! Weird? :D

I've moved some times in the past few years and those have been the only times I've wished I didn't have so many books... Never realize how heavy they are before trying to carry a box full of them! :) But luckily we bought our own house a while ago and I'm not planning to move for a loooooooong time.

Sometimes I may just sit looking at my bookshelf for some time. Hahah! Weird?

Not as weird as you think, I do that alot too. In fact before I read this post I spent about half an hour doing just that. :D

I personally own 55 (+ two incoming) books. However, there are many more in the family 'library'. The temptation to buy tons more is great, but I like to read them before they mount up!

I stare at my bookcases also. not so much recently though, they are empty and lonely looking as all the books are packed up for a move coming up.

i stare desperately wondering when i'm going to have time to read all these books. never, it seems..i used to read 12-14 books a month, now it's down to 8-10.

I counted how many books I had (excluding textbooks)... the total came out to 182. Most of these books fall into the horror and sci-fi/fantasy categories, with some nonfiction and "regular" fiction selections included.

i have around 250 and the number is growing rapidly (i have 2 on the way from amazon), thing is, i'm running out of room :( i have mostly conteporary and fantasy novels, tons of short story collections (good for during the semester) and my favorites - my fairy tales and mythologies. i also have a few plays and biographies and other random ones that quite fit in!

I have a link on my blog to the list of my collection (I know you aren't supposed to post links to your own blogs, ect. in the body of your posts, so I didn't want to post it here) but I think I'm up to roughly 175 or so books (with about a dozen of those law school textbooks). Mostly American History/biography and sports non-fiction.

I don't know when I am going to have time to read all these books, and I just keep buying more. Oh well. I'll get to them eventually. It's getting to the point that I don't know whether I should read the books I have first or read the newest bought books first.

I have a library room with about 5 or 6 floor-to-ceiling built in cases and that 's full. I would guess there are 20-30 books per shelf and maybe 7 or 8 shelves in each case. Also, we have two bookcases in the living room and two in the bedroom and my son has his own huge collection of all of his books from birth.

Which brings me to the main point. I used to never give my books away, but now I try to in some cases. I also don't buy books that I think I won't want to go back to. No bestsellers, no frivolous purchases just because they're there. I use the library every week. When I read a book review that interests me, I go online and ask for the library copy. And then I bring it back. I've definitely passed the acquisitive phase and just want to read and move on.
