I shudder at the thought. The only books I have ever parted company with has been an involuntary severing.

I've just read in another thread that you don't have any paper books... If I had an e-reader I would load it up because space wouldn't be a consideration.

Yeah I don't have any paper books at the moment - there was an involuntary parting of ways - well due to circumstances - and yes my e-reader is loaded - almost 2000 books and rising.

I am a book collector. We moved into a new home a couple of years ago and added an additional 40 feet of floor to ceiling bookcases - which are now full. I almost never buy paperbacks as if I like the book, it goes in my collection to be read again - sometime. My collection is primarily signed, first editions, fine bound, small press, or limited edition plus a couple of bookcases for the new books that I just have to have. These days I read many books on my Nook and if I really like it (Like Donna Tartt's new book "The Goldfinch") which I read from my Nook and I will now find a signed first for my collection because I liked it so much.

Meadow - I do love my books. I used to have a great career and made tons of bucks... blah.... blah... Then cancer X 3 times and a colostomy with reversal + diabetic coma - so.... no more work. I am much more selective in choosing books but I still manage to add books now and again. It is an avocation. I have always believed the way to retire is with a library full of well loved books waiting to be re-read and new books waiting to be read. Well, I am sixty and "retired" with my first cancer. I have my library and even with my Nook, I still find treasures in my library to read - i.e. devour.

I am so sorry to hear about your illness. I hope that you are in remission. I can't say I disagree with you about books n libraries n things - I just don't have the capacity at the moment to be doing the same - not sure I'd bother with first editions n all but I do have visions of a large library with deep comfortable chairs and convenient lights just at your shoulder positioned to light the page ......

wow everyone seems to have a lot of books! I have around 40 but growing collection.
I'm a fan of fantasy books.. lots of action packed stories! But... I do read other things e.g. I like Jodi Picoult books, horror, cime etc. I just joined to get some recommendations for once I've finished what I have now

I can't say I disagree with you about books n libraries n things - I just don't have the capacity at the moment to be doing the same - not sure I'd bother with first editions n all but I do have visions of a large library with deep comfortable chairs and convenient lights just at your shoulder positioned to light the page ......

Thanks, Meadow. I am in remission. As for the first, signed editions.... I suppose it is similar to other kinds of collections folks have. I guess it could be worse (it could be Barbie dolls) - smile. It just feels so great to get that book that is closest to the author's true intention - before the rewrites and focus groups. And if he/she actually held that particular book and signed it - well, it feels a bit like participating in history. I have some signed Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote that mean the world to me. Whatever floats your boat... huh?

At last count I had a little over 3,000 books. I have them divided in general categories such as : history, philosophy, art, general nonfiction, and of course, literature. I own about 100 International Collector's Library editions and I am always on the lookout for more.
