    Your country's writers.

Aww! Thats not entirely fair. Being part of the UK doesn't mean that the countries outside of England have a lot of popular and well known authors. How many Scottish, Welsh or Irish authors can you consider as famous as all the English ones? Sorry, I get this way when being...

    Promoting B&R Offline?

If you're talking about online advertising as well as offline now, how about making small, simple image signatures for members to use on other forums? I like the bookmarks mehastings! :D

    March Reads

*mutters* I only managed to completely finish: Complicity - Iain Banks Lanark - Alasdair Gray Too busy at school, but now I'm on holiday so *should* get through more...

Looking for a book similar to Brave New World

Also, try Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake and The Handmaid's Tale for more dystopia. If you're interested in the science aspect of it then the former is perfect. ;)

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

I bought: Tokyo - Mo Hayder The Kitchen God's Wife - Amy Tan £1.59 each second hand. I seem to have sapped all of the good books out of the charity shops here already... I was so disapointed I went and got a nice new volume of manga. :D

    Upcoming Albums of 2007

I know my boyfriend is excited about the Smashing Pumpkins reunion album, which is due in July (just too late to be a birthday present though...). I'm very hopeful as to the release of Shirley Manson's (Garbage singer) solo album. From what I've read it should be appearing sometime this year...

    Historical Novel Suggestions

I got about 30 pages into one of his books and put it right back on my brothers shelf. It had gone for that long with a battle and I was just plain bored with it! I would suggest The Tale of Murasaki by Liza Dalby to you if you enjoyed Empress Orchid. It is set in Japan and revolves around...

Do you have a newspaper subscription?

I don't subscribe to any, but I do read the two local papers that appear on my kitchen table on a Friday (one is delivered the other my parents buy). I also like to nab a Metro if I can whenever I go up to Glasgow on the train. Mainly it's just for the puzzles and Nemi comic, but I read whatever...

    Which One's Your Favorite?

You have obviously never read Terry Pratchett then. :p Some of them really seem like they're trying to immiate Pratchett, and even Douglas Adams. I'm sure I've actually heard variaions of some of them before...

Books you have bought but haven't read yet

Woah! I think you like using smilies more than me! :p

    Online book lists

I would recommend posting your worries on the Development section of the forums there (in the groups section). The LibraryThing system was much easier to use, I agree, but I just add my books by ISBN most of the time now.

Know of any cutting-edge and shocking NEW writers?

Not new, but how about Irvine Welsh? Some of his books are extremely weird (try his short stories and novellas), and very different. You just have to try to put up with a written Scottish accent. On the thread of Scottish authors you might want to try something by Iain Banks if...

Books you have bought but haven't read yet

*points at bookcase and starts laughing* You want me to list those? Hah! According to my Listal account I have passed my old number of unread but owned books. I now have 101. At the rate I read them I'll be done in 2 years.

    The top 50 over 50

The only authors on that list that I have read are J.D. Salinger and Ken Kesey. I don't quite understand the criteria of this because surely they actually have to be publishing new works after the age of 50, and Salinger stopped in his mid 40's. Also, with Kasey he would most likely...

Most hated 'classic' novel you've actually read

I have developed a hatred for Thomas Hardy. I have actually threatened to dig him up and give him a good, hard slap. Tess of the D'Urbervilles was terrible and The Mayor of Casterbridge is also, but isn't quite as bad as the former. I don't want to get into another long rant about it... I had...

The Earth Shall Topple Upon It's Axis

Oh shoot. Does that mean I have to nip down to the shop to pick up some cream buns? I suppose I should hoover too.

    Richard A. Wright: Black Boy

You do know he is an American, don't you? Why shouldn't he know his own language? (As unKeMPt has already stated.) And you do realise that your first sentence is grammatically incorrect? And that your second has a spelling error? And are you white? Shocking... Seriously, you might want to...

    Random Facts Thread

I actually think this one has been disproved. It all depends on the person's flexibility and the length of tongue. ;)

    Little Miss Sunshine

I don't think there was much hype for it in Scotland, as I didn't hear much about it either. :p I quite liked it, and loved the ending. :)

    how long

It depends on how long I have. I usually take about a week at the moment because of school and being online, but I can finish a 300 page book in a day or two if I'm really into it and don't have anything else on the agenda.
