    Any PC experts out there?

Any message which "fills the screen" (windows won't do that) indicates something along the lines of malware/spyware/virus as sparkchaser indicated. Try Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and Spybot Search and destroy. Both outstanding. May need to run these in safe mode. Plenty of info on the net how to...

    Well hello there

Hey Sam! I'm a newbie here, but welcome you. Have not read Fowler, but I do enjoy anything in the outdoor/adventure arena worth reading. I suppose I'm more classified as the scrambler/hiker than the mountaineer but love my outdoors here in Colorado!

I am Officially Changing my Name (maybe):

I like Charles Rivers... As far as something like Chuck, that is usually a variation off of the name Charles... I don't care what your name is though someone at some time will pin some other variation/name on you if you know them long enough! :) Also don't accept Chuckie.

Where are you? (in the book you are reading) - please read 1st post

Vilna Ghetto, WWII. A chess match is being played between the German commander and one of the prisoners, at stake are the lives of the children of the camp...

A book about a doctors experiences..

Thanks Steffee. I guess The Cider House Rules was the book they based the movie on? I think I saw the movie some time ago, but can't recall what all it was about.... I see that my library has Five Patients and Gawande's books available, so hopefully I can get there tomorrow if we don't get a...

A book about a doctors experiences..

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! I don't think I've even heard of these (except for Michael Crichton). I'm going to see what's available at the library this weekend. I rely on the library for probably 90% of my books...Also any other suggestions are welcome! Cheers

Dean King: Skeletons on the Zahara

Really? No one interested in stories like this? Anyone read Shackleton?...I'm actually just responding here so a 1 will show in the response column if you don't mind. Although I must say I noticed a little pick up in the action here on this here forum in the last 3 days or so!

A book about a doctors experiences..

Several months ago I read a book called "An Irish Country Doctor". It was classified as fictional but loosely based on the authors own experiences and "adventures" as a rural MD in Ireland. I liked it mostly for it's humor I guess. Anyways I would really like to find a book either fiction or non...

    Need a suggestion

Also do you mean new or used? I've found treasures in used book stores, but the conditions of the books leave something to be desired sometimes. Having said that if you're ok with used, it's pretty much up to you to explore what's in your area. Honestly though, some of the best even rarest (for...

What does reading a book mean to you?

Reading fiction it is simply for the pleasure of it. To get lost in a book for a little while, forget things as best as possible. For non-fiction in mose cases I pick up the book to learn or be inspired, or sometimes it's just curiousity.

What are the best psychology/self-help books?

Not long ago I read some Jung, Singer, Lacan and parts of Freud. Psychology is very interesting, but for me I realized I couldn't "analyze" myself (from psychological aspect anyway). And from what I gathered it's not a good idea to try. What it amounted to was that I was reading books meant for...

    Tragedy=reading less?

Hi Disenthral. Definitely normal. I lost my dad in 2006 to cancer and went through a "hazy" period. Lack of interest in things that once interested you is a common thing. Look at symptoms of depression on the web and look what shows up in the top 10... Good thing is I believe something is to be...

Do you play a musical instrument?

I play the guitar every now and again. Actually I played for 6 or 7 years and left off for 3 or so and now I am interested again! I am particularly interested in acoustic/fingerstyle (which I struggle with). In fact I don't even own an electric anymore (no particular reason).

Dean King: Skeletons on the Zahara

Written by Dean King. Just thought I'd throw this out there for those who may be interested. I think anyone who has a taste for adventure/outdoor stuff will appreciate this. What struck me as I read it was the fact that all the events were so well documented by some of those who went through...

    Books you didn't finish

I could not finish The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky. I think I made it through 3/4 and had to let it go.... Actually though , looking back on it this was not really a boring author/book...It was more of my sate of mind/mood at the time. I have to say though Fyodor could write some LONG...

    Hello everyone

Just wanted to say hi! I am always having a hard time figuring out what to read next (I'm not one of those people who can just burn through a bunch of books, it has to be something that REALLY interests me) so this forum looks like it may help me out quite a bit for ideas. I look forward to...
