Haha, ABC, this made me think of a story my parents tell about how I reacted when my younger sister was born... after a couple of days of having a newborn in the house, I approached my mom (I was almost 3 years old at the time) and said, "OK Mommy, you can take Jennifer back to the hospital...
Assuming it's well-written, I like long novels better. Although, the end-of-book withdrawal afterwards is worse after a really satisfying long novel than it is after a short one, IMO.
I too abide by the 50 pages rule. I actually only got through about 47 pages of Jane Austen's Emma before I chucked it, because, man, that Emma is a snot. Plus the plot was boring and I could see through all the characters.
I've tried NoveList for possibilities and here's what I came up with:
Bacacay: a collection of stories by Witold Gombrowicz
The Eagle and the Crow (contemporary Polish short fiction) by Teresa Halikowska
The Sins of Childhood and Other Stories by Boleslaw Prus
The King of the Ants by...
Hmm, let's see:
I just started reading The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood, but I won't finish that in time. Also, I started reading Emma by Jane Austen but got bored and may not pick it up again. So here's the ones I did finish:
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach...
I think all genre fiction is formulaic to some degree. Mysteries, fantasy, romance, westerns... all have certain types of characters, and certain plot features, that make them fit into their categories.
To focus more on the question, I read As I Lay Dying for school and really hated it. I...
I'm sure it was, considering the number of people just at TBF who are happily married, with kids.
I'm not married quite yet but having been in a serious relationship with my fiance for over three years, I can tell that everything you guys mentioned is important. I think one of the most...
Claire Danes. Cause she looks kinda like me but prettier :p And she could probably do the whole cat thing pretty well:p :p
What is on your keychain besides keys?
And wasn't Gabriel the second most powerful angel in the Old Testament? Interesting that he was "second place." (Michael was the most powerful I believe.) I'm sure Rushdie did that on purpose too, but what exactly he might have been saying with that, I'm not sure.
Wow, that is interesting! I also saw the movie Crash but I didn't pick that up (probably because I don't speak Farsi, but also because I was busy being concerned for the family, and about what the father would do).
I do NOT like mice  :p
(I am catlike in that I don't like loud noises and I like to curl up in warm places)
When was the last time you went to the library and what did you get?
Try Jeffrey Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series. They are mysteries that have strong grounding in real-life forensics stuff. The first one is The Coffin Dancer I believe.
I have read:
Life of Pi
The Poisonwood Bible
The Murder Room
If on a Winter's Night a Traveler
Mrs. Dalloway
The Power of One
Out of that list, I liked The Poisonwood Bible and The Power of One the best. Those books had great characters that you could really hold on to and make friends...
