I have this book, but as yet I have not read it. I hope it is worth reading.

I've seen Greene the past three times he's come to KC and his talks are as entertaining, enlightening and understandable as his books.

Like this thread, I would read again.

I finally finished this book yesterday.

It was mind-blowing.

He does a pretty damn good job of dumbing down superstring theory for the somewhat educated unwashed masses but it's still a moderately difficult read.

I just hope he's right otherwise I just spent several tens of hours learning something that's wrong.

I give it for blowing my mind with the theory's elegance.

I suppose you've seen the early reports of seeing traces of a possible Higgs boson. I trust its eventual discovery will not dismantle your knowedge? Physics, after all, is the great realm for: theories come, theories go, but experiment lives forever.

Anyway, Elegant Universe is indeed elegant in itself. But there are still some parts of our elegant universe that strike me as quite miraculous. (Blog post to follow).

It seems to me that my "not dismantle" means the same as your "doesn't negate superstring theory."

But it would probably be better if I rephrased my poat and reposted a little more clearly; I was not looking to suggest a confrontation between the observation of the Higgs boson and existing theory/theories. Or between your greater knowledge and my lesser knowledge. Or between you and me. Peace!

I for one don't even have enough of a real grasp on this subject to bemoan the dismantling of my knowledge. I'm still in the awestruck phase, and I know that the worst thing in the world one can be is a narrow minded scientist.

I'm 100% in favor of anything that increases our understanding.

Also, Brian Greene has an updated book that I'm in the process of reading.
