do you keep track of the books you read?

I have kept a list of books I've read since 1999. Its in a pretty journal and I just write the author and title as I finish each book. I also write when a new year begins. I don't think its weird at all. I want to know how many I've read, and what I've read. I find it handy, too, when talking about books with someone. If they ask me for suggestions (this is usually my sister), I can just whip it out and upon seeing the title and author, I can usually remember if I liked it and what genre it falls into.

And I have to agree with direstraits- my other very important book is my notebook with my "to read" list.

I don't keep track of the books that I read. I'd probably waste a lot of entries if I did because I start reading a lot of books and then never finish them. I give up on more books than what I actually finish reading.

I have just started keeping track this year because I'm planning on building a website that includes links to similar books, so people can look up something they liked and then find links to ones they might like as well. So far I have 75 books in the database, and over 150 others that I have read but not yet entered in a list on librarything. There aren't too many because I spend a lot of time rereading things (though not so much any more).

That's a cool idea. You will let us know once you have it up and running? That number still sounds like a lot to sift through.

What's "librarything"?

librarything is a site where you can add books to a list, either as a TBR or Read in 2005, or whatever. You sign up and sign in with the same page, so no filling in your name and address etc, and it comes up as a list, with pictures, a link to amazon, and other users with each book in their list.

i have a list of all the books i've ever read. since i'm only 14, it wasn't that hard to put it together: i looked at a list of books i readin 5th grade that i have, and all the books i own, and then whenver i remember a book i add it. since picture b ooks dont' count, technically it's all the books i read since i was 6 or 7, and the number ended up to be about 400 and counting.a nd of course i may have missed some.

Surely I'll let you all know :) I'll want to know whether my recommendations are any good, of course!

And yeah it's a pretty good number I guess - definitely more than you can name off the top of your head.

I keep a "book of books" listing the ones that I own. I pretty much never forget whether or not I've read a book. I may not be able to discuss it because I cannot remember certain happenstances but I will remember whether or not I've cracked it open.

Oh yes. I used to keep a list of books read year by year. My goal was at least 20 books a year (but I usually read far more). Now I write Amazon reviews for nearly everything I read. This serves as a good mnemonic as well as a record of what I've actually read. Plus, if I want to review my impressions of a book, it's all there preserved.

I keep a list of books I want to read too. My memory is getting fuzzier by the day so if I didn't keep lists of various sorts, I'd not be able to remember anything in a week or two:rolleyes:
What's really frustrating for me is walking into the bookstore, and trying to remember what the *$#@ book it was that I read about in TBF that sounded so interesting.

:) You mean I'm not the only one who suffers a total brain-drain from just walking into a bookstore? Whew! I thought it was just me. I can't count the times I've had kindly clerks ask me if I needed help..my dazed stare must have tipped them off:rolleyes: I wonder if there's some sort of mine-altering substance in those over-priced coffee fumes...

I have a friend that has lists on lots of stuff, one of which is her booklist. She puts in title, author and brief description plus the month/year she read it.

For my part, I keep a database of books that I own. It's basic - title/author/country/year of publication. I also include location (which bookshelf) and it's here that I can also include my books to read - location - Wishlist, of course. And if I'm going on a major book trawl I print off a copy of the wishlist items only and take it with me.:D

I use a good old fashioned Text file to keep track of what books I've read. I make a new one each year with the intention of having the lists motivate me to read more, but instead the lists just remind me how much time I wasted not reading in the past year.

I also have a spiral notebook where I mark down books I want tp read. I also have a system involving both a Sharpie and highlighter to note which ones I have a purchased and which of those I have completed.

As if those two things weren't enough, I also run a piece of freeware to keep track of the books I own. I might have a problem.

Problem? What problem? Looks like a plan that works :D

Oh Fiddlesticks! If I kept lists of the books I have, and the books I've read, I'd be old and gray before I finished typing it up!

oh wait! I am old and gray.........to late!:D

But I seriously admire those that do!

I haven't before, but am just starting to.

I am using the librarything website, but just having a different user name for each year. It's good as it has a picture of the book, and a link to find it on amazon, but sometimes has a different edition or format to the one you did read. And also, it's not in date.

It would be good to find a site that lets you add a book, date, comments maybe etc, and does all the statistics for you,

Wow, thanks for posting the site Steffee. That is an awesome site!. Just great, another book related site to take up more of my time.:D

I'll definitely have to check that out. I remember another site trying to do the same thing a while back, but it had so many missing titles and such slow maintenaince that it was completely useless. Maybe this will finally be the DVD Aficionado for books.
