My name is Ledicia, a galician name that means Hapinness, but I like to yawn too :D
I just love to read, so it is no wonder I found this forum. I hope to meet lots of fellow readers and to learn about more books for me to explore. I love almost every genre of books.
Cheers & yawns!!

Thanx ;)

Well, I want to conquer the planet through as peaceful means as possible. I am tired of wars, flu and Ufo. And thinking about yawning, can cause a person to yawn. My modus operandi will be the contagious yawning. Yes, your mirror neurons will be mine.

Supposedly, Gordon Gallup, who hypothesizes that yawning may be a means of keeping the brain cool, also hypothesizes that "contagious" yawning may be a survival instinct inherited from our evolutionary past. "During human evolutionary history when we were subject to predation and attacks by other groups, if everybody yawns in response to seeing someone yawn, the whole group becomes much more vigilant, and much better at being able to detect danger "

Besides, a recent study by the University of London has suggested that the "contagiousness" of yawns by a human will pass to dogs. The study observed that 21 of 29 dogs yawned when a stranger yawned in front of them, but did not yawn when the stranger only opened his mouth.

I am sure, you are yawning!

I actually did while reading your post!

I did a study in college on group psychology that tied in with primates and "group yawning". It was about 15 years ago when I wrote the piece, but I remember something about the alpha male and when he would yawn the rest of the group would also yawn...anyways, interesting stuff Yawn!

Cool, my logistic plan is working! ( Veni, Vidi, Vinci )

Right. The alpha male or alpha female is the individual in the community whom the others follow and defer to. In social animals, the status of the alpha is generally achieved by means of superior physical prowess with the exception of social species such as the Bonobo.
However, a yawn is a reflex of simultaneous inhalation of air and stretching of the eardrums, followed by exhalation of breath. (( Well, an individual act that can cause another person to yawn.))
I am interested in the chemical process. Yawns are caused by the same chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain that affect emotions, mood, appetite, and other phenomena. These chemicals include serotonin, dopamine, glutamic acid, and nitric oxide.

Justin91, do you know Robert Sapolsky? He is currently professor of Biological Sciences, and Professor of Neurology and Neurological Sciences. In addition, he is a research associate with the Institute of Primate Research Museums of Kenya.
He has produced to numerous scientific papers, books such as: A Primate’s Memoir: A Neuroscientist’s Unconventional Life Among the Baboons, Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: Stress Disease and Coping.

I had the urge to yawn and I just did as I was typing. Your evil, dastardly plans are well under way. Remember, Remember, the yawning 5th of November.

SFG75 with your last post, I feel like XENA: Warrior Princess and yes, I have my own Chakram

Hmmm. How does a group yawn make the group more vigilant? It seems to me that yawning precedes sleep, not heightened alertness.

A simple answer, a yawn increases the heart rate, which may also help keep you awake when you're tired by increasing the blood flow to the brain. Some studies about psychology or biopsychology explains why paratroopers yawns before they jump and why Olympic athletes do it before they compete in their event(it's pretty unlikely that it's because they're tired or bored. )

Do zebras not get ulcers? Oh.

Well I've yawned whilst reading this thread. I like it - it means I'm empathetic, or something.

I like the neurological explanations and definitions. I won't pretend to understand but it's interesting.

Nice list of favourites, too, yawn.
