Hi, I'm Jonathan Bentz. I'm an ebook author trying to promote my first ebook after a bout of depression caused me to forget some of my marketing requirements. The book and link to it is listed below, and the price is currently being shifted from its listed one of $2.99 to $0.99. I am working steadily on the final draft of book two in the series (a crime-thriller series of novellas).

One thing I've noted is that a lot of good books become bogged down with jargon and technical terms that even readers with a thirst to learn can find bothersome. One of the practices I've done is to streamline the content of my books so that if there is something explained, its in terms any reader can understand. I honestly don't know of any actual medical examiner/professional or cop who actually uses the amount of jargon one sees in todays "best-sellers". I like the Alex Cross series, but I find some of the books are Jargon-heavy, which I find detracting from the story, not enhancing it.

I am making it a point to at least make an announcement regarding my ebooks and such in appropriate forums, though I also enjoy discussing books in general which is why I'll likely go through some threads here when I have a chance...

Yeah, wasn't sure where to put that info so I figured I'd put it out front. Reason I'm going the Kindle Direct Publishing Route is because I've been burned more than once by supposedly good publishers; that, and I have the opinion that the reason for the hefty word count is so they can justify using that boring jargon, or vice versa. Either way, I write up to 30,000 words for basic genres like crime-thriller, sci-fi, urban fantasy, and action-adventure, but I don't think putting in a whole bunch of jargon is really necessary.

I think the feel of the story is moe important, and for me, that jargon doesn't put me in the the mood of a story. One way of thinking of it is the way the game L.A. Noire is designed. It doesn't waste time on jargon, and has the cops and medical examiner using normal references like "cutting instrument, possibly a kitchen knife" rather than "a sharp implement was used, with a serrated edge, to make these deep wounds". And that's one of the few jargon elements that's actually understandable....

Anyways, I'm rambling, something that happens when I post on these type of forums...

Rambling is fine.
30K is a novella, but that's cool. My "newest" story is about 39K. In general, science fiction and fantasy novels tend to be a little longer. I have 3 that are unpublished as yet and they're about 100K.

1. Welcome to BAR.

2. Self-promotion outside of the self-promotion sub-forum is a aimages.bimmerforums.com_smilies_nono.gif

3. You can get access to the self-promotion sub-forum after 10 posts. I think it's 10 posts anyway. There you can discuss marketing and whatnot with the other authors.
