How quickly do you read?

I'm just curious to know how long it takes others to get through a 500 page book.

I'm a slow reader. I get carried away imagining the book in my head. It usually takes me about 10 days to get through a 500 page book. And that's reading at least an hour a day (Usually much more on weekends.)
 
It takes me about 3-4 days to read a 500 page book. Of course it could take longer depending on my level of interest and level of difficulty.
 
I read entirely too fast. It's both a blessing and a curse, in that I get to find out what happens quickly but then when I'm done I'm left sitting around looking for a new book to read.
I'm not sure how many pages I read an hour and such, but I recently read Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George in about three days, and I think it's just short of 1000 pg.
 
Is it a weekend? Am I reading during my lunch break? In the can? Is it during the week in the evenings or a rainy Saturday with absolutely nothing else to do and no interuptions except to get coffee and go to the bathroom? (Or, if I'm jessica, Am I Driving?);)

If I read for an hour or so a day it would probably take me at least a week to read 500 pages--depending on the subject matter. I could probably kill it on a Saturday, but thats all I'd get done that day.
 
I tend to go through phases where I read loads, and then dry periods where I read little. Depends on what else I've got to do.

In a good period, I'd read about 50 to 60 pages per day. I read about 50 pages per hour.
 
It depends on many factors: whether I'm reading in English or in my mother tongue (it's quicker), the difficulty of the book, my level of concentration...

It can go from as little as 20 to as much as 70 pages an hour I guess (depending also on the size of the characters on the page!).
 
It depends on the authors style, my level of concentration and alertness and the size of the print. Oops, did I say that out loud?
It would probably take me a week or two of night time reading, or a couple of days if that was all I was doing. The last book I read in one day was Robin Cook's Fatal Cure.
 
I really don't know... there are so many factors to consider. As Marie pointed out, reading in another language than your mother tongue is an important one... Other than that: is it a book like Harry Potter or something like Ulysses? Do I have a lot of work, or is it a holiday? Is it summer or winter? There's also a difference in the way a book can be presented (I really hate it when publishers try to shove as much lines as possible on one page), etc.

Sometimes I can read a 500 page book in a day, sometimes it literally takes me months to finish...
 
Has anyone ever taken a speed reading course? I never have, but my friend took one in University. He said they teach you how to skip a lot of stuff & just take what's relevant out of the story.

I always wonder where we develop our speed (or lack of), reading habits.
And if they improve with age or just stay stagnant. I think mine improved a bit during adulthood & has now pretty much leveled off.
 
Depends how many pages I read like under 200 pages, I will finish it off in 2/3 days. Over 500 pages, possibly it takes me over a week or 2. If it is really good ones, I will non stop read in a couple of days.
 
It depends on what type of book i'm reading. If I get into the book traight away, i can read it in about 3 days (average 500 pages). I normally take one to work with me and read through my lunch.

I've just started a James Herbert one, got into it straight away, so i'll probably finish that by Saturday/
 
It takes me about 3 or 4 days to read to read a 320 page book. This is because I have difficulty concentrating. Seriously though I am beginning to lose faith that I will ever find another writer to measure up to the ones I've already read.
My favourite authors are Arturo Perez Reverte, Patrick O'Brian and Bernard Cornwell. I enjoyed American Gods by Neil Gaiman as well but I only like his short stories, his other books apart from amgods are kinda vapid.
 
I am pretty slow. Though I did read a book that was about 400 or so pages in about 3 or 4 days. Is that good, average, below average, or just plain terrible?
 
I could read a 500 page book in about 5/6 days. Assuming I wanted to finish it. I don't waste my time with books that aren't holding my attention or entertaining me. I read purely for entertainment and fun. If it's work - I put it down. I get paid to work. :)

I would love to take a speed reading course but I wouldn't want to leave anything out - I would just want to learn how to comprehend things faster. Can they teach that? ha ha.
 
I haven't read a 500 page book for a while (not deliberate, just turned out that way), so I'll have to say how long for a 1000 page book.

If I started reading a 1000 book around midday, I'd finish it by 8:00am the next morning if it's engrossing and I don't have anything to do the next day (ie. I can sleep through that day). It annoys me sometimes, but I just can't put a good book down until I'm done. Thankfully I really like re-reading books, so they're not 20 hr deals.
 
I found this website earlier where you can test your reading speed. It's quite fun.

btw -- I read at 302 words per minute and my comprehension is 64% (not much, I know, I'm working on it :)).
 
Interesting site lies!

Did a Google search for reading speed and found lots of sites that have reading tests. Found out I read from 395 to 500 wpm depending on the material.
 
Just some ramblings: I was thinking about the speed reading tests and realized that just because you CAN read fast doesn't mean you always would.

I mean, there are times I WANT to read slowly and really savour the words or description.
 
hm. it does depend for me. i used to be able to read extremely quickly. realistic fiction [good ol' teenager books] i can read very quickly. its just simple writing. literature takes me a while. it also depends how interesting the book is. i have a habit of putting the book down rather often
 
I really depends on how much time I have. I find that if I have four uninterupted hours to read, I'll read much more in those four hours, than I would in 8 1/2 hour blocks. example, The Time Traveller's Wife took me less than a day, while The Way The Crow Flies took me over a week, becuase I was working.
