Poll: 51 percent of GOP primary voters think Obama born abroad

In a shocking finding, more than half of GOP primary voters believe President Barack Obama was not born in the United States, according to a new poll.

Fifty-one percent of 400 Republican primary voters surveyed nationwide by Public Policy Polling said they ascribe to the controversial birther conspiracy theory — despite the fact that the state of Hawaii has posted Obama’s certificate of live birth.

Only 28 percent said they think the president was born in the United States — a constitutional requirement to be president. Twenty-one percent said they were “not sure.”

“Any thought that the birther theory has been put to rest can be thrown out the window,” said Dean Debnam, the president of the Democratic-leanign polling firm. “That view is still widely held in Republican circles.”

Even a number of Republicans officials have said they believe Obama was born in the US and have called for an end to the debate

Among those who do not believe Obama was born in the United States, Mike Huckabee is their first choice for president, followed by Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and then Mitt Romney.

Those who do think the president is a citizen favor Romney over the rest of the field. Huckabee, Palin and Ron Paul trail Romney among believers in Obama’s birth in Hawaii.

A CNN/Opinion Research poll in August showed that a quarter of Americans have doubts about Obama’s citizenship, with 11 percent saying the president was definitely not born in the United States.

The PPP poll was conducted Feb. 11-13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

The preference of candidates is pretty interesting.

I have that image on my computer but have been waiting for the right opportunity to use it.

This is that opportunity.

Damn you, beer good.

Really, I do not think this statement is that difficult to figure out. It was another joke, which of course is incomprehensible here on the internut. It means I wish Obama was not president. Oie. And yes I do know he was born in Hawaii.

I must buck the trend. I believe Obama was born in Hawaii, but I tend to vote republican and I voted for Huckabee in the last primary.
I had to. At the end of the day he just really comes off as a genuinely nice person. Doesn't he? Yes? No?
It is amazing that people buy the non U.S. birth conspriracy. I blame chain e-mails for this phenomenon. I routinely watch otherwise normal people forward me these conspiracy e-mails and then approach me later in the day with comments like "did you read that e-mail I sent you? Isn't that scary?"
AND THEIR SERIOUS!!!
I don't get it....

To be fair I think both parties are responsible for this rumor. Republicans for spreading it, and Democrats for being all secretive and defensive about the whole thing.

I disagree. If there was even a whiff of truthfulness to the Obama not a citizen thing, Hillary's camp would have been all over that during the primary.

I don't know how nice he is, but he seems to be trying to have his cake and eat it too with regards to the birther nonsense.

The Onion comments:
"Well, how would Mike Huckabee know that unless Mike Huckabee was growing up next door to Barack Obama in Kenya himself?"

Yeah..... But that doesn't really seem disingenous, it seems more like he just didn't know anything about what he was talking about. I do that sometimes myself.
Still seems like an awfully nice guy if you listen to him. I mean he doesn't approve of gay marriage but he seems like if a gay couple were on fire he would still throw a bucket of water on them. Know what I mean? He is not some sort of rabid arch conservative moralist type person. He is definitely a moral conservative and that is his schtick, but he is a lot more appetizing then the rest of the lot to me.
