One last tidbit of Pope info

Did you know that “Pope” is short for:

"Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God"

Primate of Italy? Huh?

Can’t one of these guys come up with an original name for once?

Benedict the 16th???? There were 15 other Benedict’s before you, use your imagination.

What about Bob The First? Or Norville the First? Wouldn't you want to be a first instead of a 16th? And what's wrong with the name your parents gave you?

Tradition just for the sake of tradition is pretty boring sometimes.

A Primate means the highest ranking cardinal in a particular country, "primate" as in first, because is the leader or main representative of the church in that country.

About the name. What do you expect? He is a very, very conservative man.

We are all Primates.

But not everyone has been called 'the Dick Cheney of the Vatican.' Now, that's a title to be proud of.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this thread will be shutdown today, so I'll say this before it is. I don't like his eyes. I think you can tell a lot about a person by their eyes, and I don't even know what it is I see, but I don't like it. I could be wrong, but it's just a first impression. Anybody else get an unsettling feeling from his expression? Maybe it was just the circumstances of the ceremony. He was probably uncomfortable. I think most people would be.

Away! He was loving it. It's what he wanted - despite his speech to the contrary prior to the conclave.

He'll probabaly be assassinated shortly.

Novella, not that kind of primate.
1.(prī'māt') A mammal of the order Primates, which includes the anthropoids and prosimians, characterized by refined development of the hands and feet, a shortened snout, and a large brain.
2. A bishop of highest rank in a province or country.
[From New Latin Prīmātēs, order name, from Latin prīmātēs, pl. of prīmās, principal, of first rank, from prīmus, first. Sense 2, from Middle English primat, from Old French, from Medieval Latin prīmās, prīmāt-, from Latin.]

There are two different words in Italian, primate and primato.

Stewart, I think Adolph I would suit him, but he is soooo conservative that he couldn't dream of using a name which has not been used at least a dozen times before

Oh, yes, I know what you mean. There's a picture here of him in the local paper where he looks, well...

But he's probably a nice person and likes cats.

nice people do not like cats.

I am in a dilemma! I have to either lie that I like cats or I have to admit (reluctantly) that I am not nice

After 120 posts in the "Are you Offended" thread and not one person owning up to being offended by anything they've read in this forum why would you assume something like that?

opps, almost forgot my smilies... :) :) :)

Duh, clueless, it was in jest.

I think Stewart is making a subtle reference to the Primate's experience in the Hitler Youth.

Subtle? No way, even thick me got it

Do you think they choose them so old on purpose, so they don't need to kill them if they think they voted for the wrong man?

There's the rub: they don't choose him. He is Chosen. That's been the thinking for centuries, anyway. Although with all the media coverage about political ambitions of the cardinals and satisfying the Asian and African demographic with a non-European choice, etc., it seems that most people have decided to ignore that teensy myth.

Are you saying the new pope is not nice, or that he doesn't like cats?

ummm? i have no opinion of the new pope. i keep meaning to find a pic to check out his eyes. in truth i was just trying to stir something up amongst any cat lovers out there. but i got nothing.

well except sanyuja who we all know is not very nice at all.... :D :D ;)

Then do check out his picture. You can see he likes cats right off the bat. His shawl like thing around his neck looks like it was woven with catnip.

"The new pope turned 78 on Saturday."

He should look tired, he's almost 80.
He should retire, not be taking on a new job.
