Possibly. They also used planes in the Age before his so he may have been having a flashback through Lews Therin. I need to reread the series...

So is the world where this takes place Earth? In the extreme past or future? When I read that, that's where I thought Jordan was going with it.

It's kind of hard to explain. Yes, it's Earth. It could be the past OR future, because the Earth cycles through 7 Ages all the time. The same relative thing happens in each cycle (the 3rd, 4th ages are the same etc.) The books take place during the 3rd Age. I believe we are now in the 7th Age, and when we eventually get to a nuclear holocaust, we'll be sent back to the 1st Age and the cycle will repeat itself.

Yeah. The series is very popular and mostly well written. It's up to 11 books now, plus a prequel. There's an internet FAQ, do a search on Yahoo, you'll find it, but don't bother until you've read all the books.
The biggest disappointment, is the author is planning to finish the series in book 12, and he isn't near close to wrapping up all the little plot lines. In fact, he said he will be deliberately leaving some of the plot lines unfinished.
It's really disappointing. He said he planned on finishing the series in 12 books, so that's what he's going to do.
I personally believe he's compromising the quality of the series just to get it done in 12 books, because there's very little chance he can successfully wrap it up in one more book without leaving a lot of stuff unfinished and/or rushed.

I've read all the books and am totally obsessed with the series. He has indeed said the 12th will be the last no matter how long it must be. I'm confident that he can give it a suitable ending. The sheer complexity of the series is astounding; I'm convinced Robert Jordan is a genius.
It may be a couple years before the 12th is finished, Robert Jordan developed a serious heart problem last year and has been having to go through some tough treatments.

I am so glad we have a thread on Wheel of Time - I love this series! A friend in college recommended I read Eye of the World my junior year - my grades suffered that whole semester. I tore through the first 9 because that's all he had out at the time. Since then I've read them all again as well as 10 and 11. I didn't know that 12 was going to be the last, and I agree with Mathius that is seems the quality will be compromised because he's trying to fit it all in.
This series is absolutely genius, I agree. Just talking about it makes me want to go read them all again. The characters are wonderful and his world is absolutely astounding. I love his whole concept of magic with the male and female halves and the idea of 'weaving' with threads. Totally enthralling.
My one complaint is that the dramatic irony is so drastic. I get so frustrated at the characters who make world-changing decisions on assumptions they have when I, as the reader, know the truth of what's really going on. Of course, maybe that's just part of the genius. I guess its a good sign that I'm so involved that I scream and want to throw the book across the room because of ignorant characters...
Anyway, this series is one of the first I recommend to people looking for a great fantasy read. I always follow with a warning, though - be prepared to spend a lot of time and late nights with Jordan because you're not going to be able to put it down!

Yes, by all means, don't let my complaints steer you away from this series. It's quite phenomenal.
I wouldn't go so far as to call RJ a genius, but that's because I've read articles and interviews with him and he seems to have a very high opinion of himself as it is!
But this is a really, really, wonderful series, it's just that I can't help but feel a bit cheated that it's going to be over when I don't feel as though the story will be completely told.
In fact, RJ's "Conan the Barbarian" series is quite wonderful as well. It's only three books, and doesn't have all the political aspects of WoT, but I would recommend them to anyone.
For anyone interested, he's also written "Fallion Blood" under another name (which escapes me at the moment). It's supposed to be somewhat based on the Civil War, but I've never been into realistic fiction, so I never attempted to read it.
