How is that true? If someone doesn't want to write a four paragraph post ona book they liked, they can't read? Explain that to me.

Oh, and I am the w1nz0r.

I thought you were studying English. I said sentence, not paragraph.

Edit: Sorry, I've realised you weren't referring to me. Or were you?

That is very true.

I don't know that it is, many may like a book for reasons they don't have the ability or comfort level to explain. I also find that when arguing in the negative some aren't really bringing forth valid facts they are just flinging insults.

If you really want better information on a book, why not ask, instead of going on a search and destroy mession? What's wrong with saying "I didn't like that book here's why" and asking "what did you like about it" I don't think anyone has a problem with that, but I have seen very few of your arguments that don't delve into personal insults.

I'm sure some members would enjoy nothing more than to slobber over one of Cussler's Dirk Diggler stories. That's fine, if you are that way inclinced, but it should be remembered that there are also a number of members who would rather cover their eyes with plaster and wait for the sun to melt than read that kind of thing. Are they not allowed to voice their opinion too?

Yes, they can voice their opinion. Are they entitled to do so EVERY time? Are they entitled to do so in the author threads for FANS of the given author? Start a critical thread in the general books discussion, but when folks just want to chat about Cussler or Clancy with other fans of those books, the nattering-nabobs of negativity need to stay out of it.

i agree with ronny....no one is name calling or pointing fingers at anyone, but why should anyone be subjected to belittling by anyone else because they may not read to the level of others. yes, i post mostly in the general chat...it is where i feel comfortable..why? because of the one time i mentioned that i liked dan brwon and the davinci code, i got called an assface. i am not going to mention who said it, it doesn't matter, the point is, i felt like a fucking idiot and felt like i couldn't post on the BOOK SECTION of a BOOK FORUM.

I didn't want to point fingers either which is why I didn't post your name with your quote when I used it as an example.

Yes, yes, yesssssssssssssssssssss!

Have you ever considered the philanthropic nature of the book forum literati?

I don't think people need to write a big paragraph (or two) about why they liked a book. I often have trouble putting my thoughts together as well. I can usually manage a sentence though. I wouldn't mind seeing something along the lines of "I really liked The Da Vinci Code because I've always thought the Holy Grail story was about something other than a cup". Or even, "I liked Misery because it scared the pants off of me". Something more descriptive than "I loved Ragtime, it was awesome" would let me know if I want to read a book. I've picked up a lot of books here based on descriptive reviews I've seen from Novella, Stewart and a few others. People's reviews and suggestions have helped to break me from my "modern literature sucks, I'll stick to the classics" slump I was in at the begining of the year.

I love those guys. They're my heroes.

well, bobbyburns is defiantely up there for me..but that's not the topic at hand here.

martin..you made a really good point. i haven't been here for that long, but i have noticed a few slight changes in the atmosphere. i think you are a cool cat and would hate for you to leave again.....

stewart, you also make a good point. but no one wants to start pointing fingers and naming names..why? well, what the hell good will it do other than cause a huge uproar amongst the forum and people will get all bent that they were named....it wouldn't do a world of good.

i personally, got over being called an assface and could care less what others may or may not think of me. if you think i am either stupid, silly, a tool...whatever it may be, well than your entitled to your opinion. we'll never meet, i won't lose sleep.

but my very last point that i will make and then i will quietly head back to another thread is this....people are so much braver when your on the internet. i hope that most people when amongst a group don't go out of their way to make others feel stupid for not agreeing with every word they say. i couldn't imagine such a thing. you have to remember, we're all just kind folk, chatting about books, life, shit...

Phew! I waded through the 397 posts and now I'm finally here!

I have a short story for y'all. When I was a complete newbie (and I suppose some people would still call me that), I posted about Faulkner, and I remember deliberately constructing my critical post along the lines of "this author is total crap, I'd rather claw my eyes out than read anything by him." The reason why I went so over the top? Because my first impression of this forum was that EVERYONE was like this, and to fit in I artificially made my first post dramatically negative.

Since then I've calmed down quite a bit and I've tried to be low-key and respectful in my disagreements. I really like this forum because I can give people suggestions about what they might like to read... I like to think that maybe I'm making people happy by doing this. From reading this thread it looks like people could use a little happiness around here... :)

So you were treated badly and inturn decided to treat others that way? I mentioned before I think you are really smart, I see your point on many things, we have even joked around a bit or I thought we did. I don't want to see you go, I didn't name you as a problem. It was the insults I was trying to get rid of, not the poster.

i actually think, stewart, that you have a crush on me and that is why you try desperately to get my attention..see, that was a joke too!! :D x a million

That's all fine and dandy if you don't like the guy. You made a post and to be honest with you, I thought you worded it well. Now if you kept harping on the Cussler thread, then you would've been one to troll for trolling's sake. At the same time, I don't understand why it's so hard for fans of a given author to share stories about an author's books, as well as to socialize in general. Why is that so much to ask in a book forum?

That is perfectly fine! However, you must also realise that some people can socialise about not being a fan of a particular author. 'Common ground' can be found in both high and low places...
