Stephen King / Dark Tower Comics!

Oh, wow!

This would be pretty darn cool. Graphic novel format can really enrich a story (I'm thinking of Art Spiegelman here).

I'm thinking Jae Lee is not a bad choice - his pencils are dark... But I think the story will probably fall flat for those familiar with the story already - unless Marvel plans a 100+ issue run... :)

Maybe will get it when it's in trade paperback.

Marvel Dark Tower Update
Stephen and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said Stephen. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."

The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007.

(but the hardcover will be ready for my 25th Birthday. yay!)

Here's a Marvel link to some of the artwork for the comic and more news.

I couldn't be more excited about this. I am not surprised that it has been delayed already, I would have been surprised if it had not been delayed. I mean King did leave the Ka-tet on Blaine the psychotic mono for ten years before Wizard and Glass

So, it's time again...

Hopefully there won't be another delay.

So at midnight last night, the first DT issue was released. I went to my local comic book store & geeked out on everything. There were only about 4 other people there but it was okay. Since there were so few, the manager gave us a bunch of freebies!

Haven't read it yet, but I'll let y'all know soon. :p

I've read a lot of books, and the only one I still to this day (after finishing), consider one of the best God damned stories of all time is the Dark Tower. I heard in an article that the comics wil be based mianly off the fourth novel, describing Roland's back story when more so than what SK did in the original series. I don't think it'll be amazing, but it's Dark Tower, so I'll read it.

I hope in time King decides to pay some unbelievably talented artist or what not to redo Dark Tower in comic form. Would be big as hell, yeah, but still dang awesome. o.0

 I'm confused. Do you mean do the whole original Dark Tower in comic form?

Well, I finished reading the comic earlier the day of its release.
It's actually not a story we don't already know. It's the story of
Roland provoked by Marten to challenge Cort & become a gunslinger
... So yeah, that was from DT IV, right? Probably just a few new things here at there, extra dialogue among characters, etc. But it's cool & I really enjoyed it.

Peter David, who wrote the script, goes a little too heavy on the Mid-World language & at times it gets a little cheesy... but otherwise, I enjoyed reading it.

Yes, quite a task, but damn it if it wouldn't be an awesome product. Also, while I'm a fast reader, some of my friends aren't as speedy as I. One of them became real hooked on the story of Dark Tower but only made it halfway through the second novel, saying he likes it but he just doesn't think he'll be able to tackle the series (other things to read in school, homework, etc.). I'm sure he and others who might not enjoy reading would love to get a taste of the Dark Tower's full story.

Report about King at the New York Comic Convention from AICN:
He came out wearing a SHAUN OF THE DEAD t-shirt and the audience just went nuts for him. They were all there to talk about the comic, but the geeks, of course, wanted to know a little bit about everything. Here's a rundown of what was discussed:

-Right now there are no plans to bring on any other artist for the Dark Tower comics. King loved Jae Lee's work and says that these books are firmly Lee's, Furth's and David's vision.

-The comics will follow Roland through Mejis (all Book 4 stuff), but it definitely WILL go past Book 4 and all the way up to Jericho Hill, which King demanded a giant splash page from Lee.

- Regarding further Dark Tower comics, King said, "There's always more stories."

- Hal from 2001 inspired Blaine the Mono (and that is the truth).

- When King writes, he doesn't see his characters, he doesn't tend to visualize them. "It's like I'm behind their eyes... maybe if they looked in a mirror..."

- King views the Dark Tower series as a first draft and plans to rewrite the entire series, but he promises he won't make them the Special Editions. The originals will always be out there.

Now for the two biggest newsworthy bits to come out of the panel:

- When asked if he'd turn another one of his books into a comic series with Marvel, King said he and Quesada were just beginning to talk about doing a version of The Stand as a Comic series. That made me perk up. How cool would that be?

- And the JJ Abrams bit. King said that Damon Lindelof and JJ Abrams did express interest, especially Damon, and wanted to develop the project. King said he was resistant to everybody in the past, but trusted Abrams and Lindelof. He said he trusted Frank Darabont, too, but he felt Frank always had too much on his plate. When Abrams and Lindelof approached King about trying to make the project work, King responded, "I'll tell you what... you can option the books and see what you can do with it." Nothing is set up, but they have the option... and if it doesn't work out, then no harm no foul, yeah? How much did Abrams and Lindelof pay for the option? $19, of course.

Very very awesome Lenny! Thank you so much for sharing this great news. I'm so psyched! I really like J.J. Abrams... I think he would probably do a fine job.

And hell yeah, I would love to see The Stand make it as a comic!
