Stephen King

Here is an excellent NPR story on Stephen King. A few things that I found interesting:

On the nurses who took care of him

"You know, they'd all read Misery, and they worked for an outfit called the Bangor Area Visiting Nurses. These are nurses who go into the home and give home care. And I think one of them told me toward the end of the period, where I needed full-time nursing, that they had all read it, and they had all been called into the office by their superior and told in no uncertain terms, 'You don't make any Misery jokes.' "
:lol::lol::lol:

On purchasing the car that struck him

"I was in the hospital, mostly unconscious; my wife got a lawyer who's just a friend of the family. My son and his son went to school together, so we know him really well. And she got in touch with him and said, 'Buy it so that somebody else doesn't buy it and decide to break it up and sell it on eBay, on the Internet.' And so he did. And for about six months, I did have these, sort of, fantasies ... of smashing the van up. But my wife — I don't always listen to her the first time. But sooner or later, she usually gets through. And what she says makes more sense than what I had planned. And her thought was that the best thing to do would be to very quietly remove it from this plane of existence, which is what we did."

Reading "Blockade Billy" right now, a short novel and the first King I have read in many years. I'm hooked after 15 pages.

I couldn't get into Wizard and Glass, skipped through most of it. That was 7 years ago and even though I'm pretty sure I'll re-read the series one day my plan is to skip book 4 altogether the second time around.

 I know what you mean. It was just so different from the rest...
After I finished it, I felt like it was the worst, I didn't like it at all, especially since it came after my favorite, DTIII: Wastelands. It felt like a disappointment. But you know, I really didn't enjoy DTV: Wolves. Bleh. It felt like a filler episode.

I don't remember disliking Wolves, but that was 6 years ago so who knows. I do remember how much I hated Wizard and Glass :D
Before reading The Dark Tower I had only read Carrie, Night Shift, Insomnia and Dolores Claiborne, but I wasn't really into Stephen King. After reading books 1 - 3 (and skipping through most of book 4), I started reading other SK books while waiting for the remaining 3 to come out. The first one was It, then came The Dark Half and Rose Madder after that. Since then I've read many others and I've made a point of buying his books as soon as they come out. Luckily for me, there are still quite a few of his books I haven't read.

I just got my very first Stephen King book (Under the Dome). I am very excited to see if I like his stuff (which I assume I will).

Under The Dome was a good book. In my opinion, it isn't King's best but you should enjoy it.

So far (about 30 pages in), I am really liking the way he writes and the story is very gripping. I chose this book because the story seemed very interesting, and I tend to shy away from books that are, for lack of a better word, creepy/scary. Can you recommend which is one of his best, preferably one that will not interfere with me falling asleep at night :)

Well, my all time favorite by SK is It. This book you may loose sleep over though. The Stand is very good and isn't to scary, it may have some scary moments but I don't consider it a book where you will be pulling the covers over your head.
Actually you may want to try the book Different Seasons This is a collection of four short stories which are all pretty tame (non-horrific) Three of these stories were made into movies that you may have seen but the written stories are way better.

I'm afraid to read the Dark Tower series again because I know I will throw book five across the room.

Anyone looking forward to the new King book coming out in November? I've got it on my requests from ILL.

Yes! It comes out on the 9th so I'm hoping that if I order it right away, it'll arrive in time for my b-day (20th). And hopefully I'll have finished reading Under the Dome by then :D

I am looking forward to the new book. I heard it was a collection of short stories, so it should be good.

As far as The Dark Tower series, I tried getting into this but couldn't get in too it. I read the Gunslinger years ago but I didn't quite get it.
