What do you use as a bookmark?

Bookmarks annoy me too. So, yes, I dog-ear (and I underline, and I highlight, and make notes in the margin). But the best bookmarks I've ever used, and the only ones I buy anymore, are the Last Line brand. They slide over the edge of the page you're on, and one side's shaped like an arrow with a little window in it, so you can see the last line you were on, too.

Most of the time I really don't need a bookmark, I can normaly just remember where I was in the book. If i do use a bookmark I use a peice of notebook paper or a floppy disk (i only have one)

I'm also strongly against the heinous crime of turning down the corners of pages. Most of my family do this, so I try to avoid lending my books to them.

At the moment I'm using a black ribbon that used to be part of my wallet: it's good because it's long enough to stick out at both ends of the book, so don't have to spend ages looking for the page with a ripped piece of paper in.

I used to have a clippy bookmark which was magnetic that held onto the page you were on. It had my name on it and a poem about my 'nature'. I miss that bookmark.

I like to carry as little as possible, but I always carry a paperback for bus rides, waits in line, etc. As I read, I tear off the pages and throw them away. As an additional benefit, I don't need a bookmark.

Tarot cards: I have a deck but would never really use them, but didn't want them to just collect dust as they are very pretty, so I use them as bookmarks. Means I never really run out and can keep multiple books on the go.

I'm a bookmark collector. I usually use the ones which come with the book, unless I cannot write on them (those damn things made of plastic ). I like to write notes while I'm reading, if not on the book itself, then on the bookmark.

Since my son is on break and not making new bookmarks for me, I have been using the sample credit cards that they send in the mail.

For p/b Anything that comes to hand train or bus tickets, photo's also like to use postcards.
I have Book thongs for Hardbacks, like to fiddle with the beads while reading.
At least that stops me fiddling with my hair (as I'm told I do by my dear HB)

I try really hard to use the bookmarks that come free with most of the books I buy, but *hangs head in shame* I nearly always end up folding the corner of the page.Naughty naughty.

I use either a cartoon-picture of an angry dwarf-man, which I cut out of a magazine, or I use a little black ribbon with safety pins in the ends of it.
I never fold the corners. Well, I might if it's a library book, but that's just because I don't want to get emotionally attached to it.
I once borrowed a big book with pictures of beautiful cars from the 50's, and I kept borrowing it over and over and kept it for about three months until I finally let it go. It was terrible. It's not the same with "regular" book though, that I read from beginning to end. And the only reason I finally delivered my dear car-book was because I had to. I shouldn't have borrowed it, I should have stolen it! Damn, that would have been so much easier.

I think that a nice bookmark adds to the pleasure of reading. But since I'd hate to spend money on a bookmark, I make my own, with scraps of colored and textured paper, autumn leaves, etc.

I was wondering what everybody else use as a bookmark? Do some of you simply fold the corner of the page ?

The bookmark I choose depends on the book and the mood the book encourages. I have quite a collection. When my children were small and made me pictures on little pieces of paper - and I kept them, as any parent would - I started using them as bookmarks. Hint: to preserve the picture I "laminate" it on both sides with clear packing tape. Now that they are older, they get a kick out of it.
