What do you use as a bookmark?

As a child I used to fold pages...but since having to buy my own books so I have a little more respect for them.

I have a close friend who has two young daughters. They recently had their school photos taken and one of the gimmicks was to have the photo's printed on bookmarks. The girls opted to give their bookmarks to me...I have to alternate bookmarks with each new book I start so they each get their share.

Hi everyone, I am new to this site, so thought I'd start with an easy topic!

I used to just try and remember my last page (which resulted in a couple of lost reading minutes everynight).

But we have just been to Wales on holiday and I got myself a beautiful, silver handcrafted one that fits over the top of the page. A lovely reminder of a gorgeous place! :D

Ermmmm, quite boringly I'm afraid to say I simply use a bookmark.

The bookmark I'm currently using is a free one that I picked up in Waterstones and it's produced by the people who write those little beginner's guides on historical figures.

On this bookmark there are pictures of Sylvia Plath, Thomas Hardy, Plato, Jung and Darwin.

If you want more information there is a telephone numbers and an internet site to visit.

Wow!

I have a bizillion bookmarks from when I owned a bookshop, since closed. Furthermore, authors sent me about a thousand more of THEIR bookmarks with the shop's logo. I use them, then leave them in the books I return to the library just to get rid of them.

I'm trying to get rid of the ones I have the most of, and I would happily ship anyone as many bookmarks as you wanted, if you agreed to pay postage. You could probably get about 8 bookmarks per 35 cent stamp within the US. You could pay me through Paypal (35 cents for each 8 bookmarks). If you want to buy in bulk, I can ship thousands. Whoopee! Email me at bookandquill@charter.net for details and to arrange. The supply is literally endless.

For the past few months, I've been using a small piece of plastic that clips onto the page (without damaging it). I found it in my house one day, and it wasn't in a book so I decided to take it. Before that, I used a folded piece of paper, on which I had a list of everything I've read this year.

I always use a proper bookmark but if an emergency crops up - for instance, no available bookmarks going spare, I have been known to use shopping receipts, torn corners off newspapers, envelopes, bills - in fact anything that comes to hand. I hate leaving books open print-side down.

you know how in the perfume department they hand out little cardboard cutouts of the perfume sprayed with the scent? those are what i use.

Hey, that'd be a great tip for hippies.

I use whatever is laying around. Sticky notes folded in half, movie ticket stubs, pictures, guitar picks, etc. Or if there's nothing laying around, I'll just memorize the page number.

If I really have nothing to use as a bookmark I memorize the page number. But that only works for one book at a time. Can't walk around with 9 page numbers memorized :p

I have the authorized boomarks with neat artwork - quite the collection by now... and they do get worn out *cries*

Sometimes admittedly I do fold the corner, but never as a reading book mark. I use it for my study books. Important quotes and the like I tend to mark with 'donkey-ears' as we call them in Danish, it's folded corners, yes, but unlike bookmarks they don't fall out of the book when lying in my bag, besides, having 10+ bookmarks in one book... no, that just won't go.

Other than that single excuse for folding the rare corner I'm fussy about my books generally. Some of my books are outright old, but it doesn't show in anything but the slight yellowing of the less than top-quality paper :p

RE: Bookmarks

I think that a nice bookmark adds to the pleasure of reading.
- me too!

Looking at the posts i've come to the conclusion i'm posh or fussy or both! Loads of people seem to just use scraps of paper  that's not a reading experience lol nah, i use a fabric one -cross stitch made for me by a friend years back and its gone all nice and soft and floppy. I hate cardboard ones or anything but fabric actually! I have designed a few bookmarks in the past but don't use them coz i like the fabric one. I don't actually like the design on it anymore particulary: A worm and a book saying 'I'm a bookworm', and i've seen loads of cross stitch ones i'm eager to do....just need the time, but when i have it i'm going on make a CS poppy one, flowers, old fashioned or celtic knot type i think, but by then no doubt i'll have changed my mind!

As for folding corners - i used to *shock horror* NEVER NOW!! yikes, no. I'm the complete opposite now - obsessive with keeping new books pristine, but on the other hand i like old books too that have a whethered characteur too them - careful with them too tho. Not so keen on the imbetween tho ;)

While I love the cute and lovely bookmarks one can buy or make, reality at my house is: If I like it, so will at least one child or another! So, I use either a blank note card, or whatever I can find that won't damage the book. Orphan playing cards are fun alternatives :D

That's not very considerate if you're reading a library book. Not everyone appreciates a blast of scent in a book, especially if they have allergies.

Stewart, you are gross and need to go to charm school! :p

I have a stash of old business cards and free bookmarks picked up at the library and bookstore. Currently I'm using part of an oversized free bookmark that I tore into thirds, the one I'm using now is disintegrating but it still works.

Actually, Stewart has a pretty good idea.

They stick to the page well, and when you come back to your place, you have a free snack with your read!

Good thinking, Stew!

That's another sign-up for charm school.

Stewart, you are a bad influence on the boys here. Please try to act more like a lady. Thank you.
