It is physically impossible to 'catch up on sleep' - sleep you miss out on, you miss out on for the rest of your life.
Actually, if you don't get enough sleep you build up a sleep debt. If you sleep for longer each night you will start to repay this sleep debt and will feel less tired during the day. So, not only can you catch up on your sleep, it's actually quite important that you do.

I've also read its not possible - I wonder if it's in any of my old psy files upstairs... might dig it out for my own amusement.

Well, I'm mostly going by the research of William Dement. The man who coined the term REM and the first person to link it to dreaming.

The body keeps an accurate record of your sleep debt for at least two weeks, longer term it's not known and is harder to say. By using the multiple sleep latency test, he's shown that by sleeping an hour extra each night you can start to repay your sleep debt.

So, as I say, I'd be very interested to see the references. :)

Personally I always feel like I ought to 'catch up' on sleep - and kind of feel better for it - if one night I get 6 hours, the next night I'll try and get 9... but my sleeping patterns are based around shift work and therefore a bit erratic.

But as I said, I definitely have read that it's impossible to catch up somewhere.... not saying its based on highly scientific evidence...

That's why I like to see the references. Most of the time you find that it's just hearsay or myth, like the whole thing about only using 10% of your brain. When you ask where people heard it, they can't tell you, though they're still absolutely positive it's completely true. :)

That said, it is a genuine interest. I have a history of sleep disorders, so I'm always interested in new pieces of research on the subject.

I can't give you references, Litany.

What I don't understand is this - what the hell does the manager of Michael Stipe and gang have to do with this?

Cheers, Martin

I can sleep through 7 - 8 hours. If I sleep less so I catch up sleep when I takes some nap. It help me some way!!
