Shade, if you dislike those you've mentioned, then Alias Grace is a good not-so-apathetic choice of Atwood's. It's still as sensational but very historical in style, and less fantastical.

I loved Sophie's World. I was fifteen when I first read it and it made me want to be a philosopher. Jostein Gaarder is probably the only author whose books I've read all of.
