Dean Koontz

Fear Nothing is the first part of the Christopher Snow series, so you should read that first, then get Seize the Night later if you like it. That series is my favorite of Koontz's work, still waiting for him to bring out the third book! (Its getting on for seven or eight years since the first book and he keeps promising the third).

And Rex, thanks for the advice, but I think I'll find out for myself, especially since you don't seem to want to expand on why you dislike him so much or even what books you have read of his. Which is fine, but I don't think I can take anyones advice based on the word 'garbage' alone.

Best way! I like most of Koontz's work, but I will admit that he has written the occasional absolute clunker (The Taking, which I hated, springs to mind here). I think I enjoyed some of his earlier books the best.

I just finished Frankenstein and liked it. Not as much as the Chris Snow books, but it holds a lot of promise and I will get the next book in August if it's a paperback original ...

Anyway, I finished Watchers, great book! I started Odd Thomas, it's not starting out so great though.

I finished reading <b>Life Expectancy</b> the other night and I liked it. It was more suspense than horror, but Koontz did a great job in keeping the reader reading. Every chapter ended with a shocking moment or revelation. I enjoyed the overall feeling I got from the book and I recommend it to any Koontz fan.

I think this post explains rex's antipathy for Koontz. To be fair, the explanations for why people like him have not been much more detailed than rex's explanation for why she (?) doesn't like him.

Sorry you feel that way. If you were inquiring as to what makes Koontz such a great author just ask, but I was under the impression that most people in here already knew that they liked Koontz and simply wanted to get help deciding which book to read next. As for Rex please chime in and answer these questions directed to you, especially if you want to "save" these Deean Koontz newbies from making such "mistakes." It is often said that the opinion of a critic and his/her reasoning is much more enlightening and unbiased than that of a fan.

Thanks Robert. I have a lot of Koontz books and just never know which one to read next, and I read the back of "The Mask" and didn't think I'd like it but since you gave it such praise I figured what the heck and I am so glad too. I just finished it not more than twenty minutes ago and I was completely blown away it was really very good. I think I might read Lightning next since that's what my girlfriend is already reading but I should read something else to give her a bigger head start.

I'm readingThe Door to December right now and the main female character Laura annoys me a little. Other than that, the narration is good. First book of his I've ever read, and probably will be the last.

I started reading Koontz years ago by accident. I went to one of those second hand book traders and they had a copie ofFun house for $2.00. I liked it at the time and read a few more, then stoped reading for a while. I got an offer to get<b>Life Expectancy</b> for cheep so I got it, and just finished. It was great, I loved the characters soooo much, I found it hard to put it down. I am glad to see that his talent hasn't watered down too much, but I tell you, I will be studying the circus dynamics closley next time I visit the big top.

I see Koontz is releasing another Odd Thomas novel (Forever Odd) in November '05. Something to look forward too.

That's true. It's often instructive to order Amazon reviews by lowest rating first, though sometimes that tells you more about the person posting the review than about the book.

I think any author discussion forum really needs a bit of, well, discussion to it. It should be able to interest those who aren't familiar with the author's books as well as those who are.

My first Dean Koontz novel was Life Expectancy. Odd Thomas wouldn't be a bad place to start either.
