Maybe that historical reason is due to our imprecise speech here in the U.S.. Just know that when we say European we mean it more as a state of mind then some mere geographical technicality.
Which is funny, considering that European countries (which obviously include the UK, except to those who still believe Britannia rules the waves) have much more in common geographically than they do in terms of "state of mind."
It does? I was under the impression that most of the commonwealth had certain, ahem, issues with being ruled by the British, which for the most part was resolved by 1960 or so?
The Commonwealth is not a political union, but an intergovernmental organisation through which countries with diverse social, political and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status.
