TBF's "Troll" trouble

Do we have troubles with trolls?

Can someone tell me exactly what 'trolling' is? Is it leaving short messages - because I do that. I don't do it to annoy though. Unless it's having a go at hippies.

I find it odd, only two of the non-mods posting in this thread have been here over a year and the rest are still green, myself included. I question the manners of "these" people that question the workings of the forum without paying their dues; it seems to me that these people that are trying to "teach" us about morals, should look at their own actions instead of trying to get the world to fit their view.

I find it odd to think that one needs to be a member for more than 12 months to understand what is going on and have an opinion about it.

"these" people feel like as much a part of this community as those who have been here forever.

Maybe I'm a blind troll, but I haven't seen anyone here trying to get anyone else to "fit their view".

what dues, exactly, are to be paid here? That term is usually attributed to a situation wherein you must apply much discipline and sacrifice to acheive a certain level of skill before you can be accepted into a society. I don't think that sort of heirarchy exists here. If, however, you feel a need to pay some dues, you may contact me at my e-mail address below. I have made myself the honorary dues collector.

I may be smoking a cigar in a windy, damp place here, but I do believe ruach is alluding to the holier-than-thou attitude of certain members who believe it is their Satanic right to impose their milky, white gum-gum morals on the rest of the community.

If history serves a purpose, it is that religious over-zealousness is shit-wankity-wank.

I haven't seen any of this. Maybe I don't visit the right threads?

I concur with the shit-wankity-wankness.

From Dictionary.com

troll

v.,n. 1. [From the Usenet group alt.folklore.urban] To
utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable
responses or flames; or, the post itself. Derives from the phrase
"trolling for newbies" which in turn comes from mainstream
"trolling", a style of fishing in which one trails bait through a
likely spot hoping for a bite. The well-constructed troll is a post
that induces lots of newbies and flamers to make themselves look
even more clueless than they already do, while subtly conveying to
the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact a deliberate
troll. If you don't fall for the joke, you get to be in on it. See
also YHBT. 2. An individual who chronically trolls in sense 1;
regularly posts specious arguments, flames or personal attacks to a
newsgroup, discussion list, or in email for no other purpose than to
annoy someone or disrupt a discussion. Trolls are recognizable by
the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic
at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait. Like the ugly
creatures they are named after, they exhibit no redeeming
characteristics, and as such, they are recognized as a lower form of
life on the net, as in, "Oh, ignore him, he's just a troll."

I recently looked in the mirror to see if I carried any characteristics of a troll (big warty nose, greenish-blue skin, snot everywhere), but it was not_sirmyk's reflection cast back, not my own. I think he was the troll, which is why he's currently burried in the backyard.

Tar and feather the ones doing the complaining.

I can only assume that both of these comments are aimed, at least partially, at myself, as I was the only person to comment that I believed it was somewhat of a problem. AND I offered a solution, which no one commented on.

Yes, I've only been part of the forum for 7 months. But I've been a member of the human race for a lot longer, in addition to a number of other online forums. I'm not trying to teach anyone anything about morals, I'm simply saying that one should not suspend courtesy because you can hide behind your screen name. I've been part of a forum where the atmosphere began to stink because members got it into their heads that they could say whatever they damn well chose to anyone because ultimately there were no repercussions. Many people left that forum, myself included.

So if me saying 'be nice to each other' on the odd occasion is being "holier-than-thou" or an example of "religious over-zealousness", then I'll accept that we differ in our interpretations of how to interact in society.

I agree with Kookamor about civility and mutual respect. Often times, that is something that is lost on online forums since people are not face to face and they are behind a computer screen. Yes, you shouldn't have to go around as if you are on eggshells, but then again, how you act in public should not be how you act in private if there is a chasm between the two. People treat others differently according to the given situation. I believe that on online forums, you should interact with others in a semi-formal situation. You wouldn't tell dirty jokes to your grandmother or to your boss if you were in a professional job situation. Likewise, why would you attempt to do so with someone online if you didn't know them? A person might be more coarse and rough around the edges when it comes to certain things, but I don't think a person has a constitutional right to act like that in public, at least act act like it and not get a negative reaction, let alone be surprised by that reaction in any way. Now if your friends, that's a whole other omelette.

I don't know, I'm not all into the "newbie" vs. "FOG" thing. Your post count is not an indication of your intelligence, or how much "pull" you have here.

Sometimes you have to push various buttons to understand others. I pushed leckert's belly button and he made that Pilsbury Doughboy "hehe" noise.

Before I begin, I would like to amend my earler post; there were more than two members with over a years membership that posted.

The problem with most new members is they don't know when or how to listen (would you like proof?). They are more concerned with what they have to say. I'm sure in your 70-odd days and 1000 plus post, you've really had lots of meaningful things to say. As for whether or not your opinion has any merit and other topics, please see my next post (I didn't want you to feel left out).

I'm sorry you thought my comment was aimed towards you, because it wasn't. You have my respect for posting the way you did, while believing that.

The odd saying "be nice to each other" is quite alright in my book; it is a suggestion to follow if I feel it has merit. My problem comes when one wants to take an opinion and turn it into a rule/law. Let me give you an example: "You wouldn't tell dirty jokes to your grandmother or to your boss if you were in a professional job situation." just because they wouldn't doesn't mean the rest of the world feels the same way; perhaps they are an orphan and jobless(this is also an instance of applying an image to the world).

A metaphor, if you will...the forum is a house. There happens to be a large tree growing next to this house, with a large branch growing right over the house. Now, the newest teneants to this house are afraid that the large branch will fall on them and cause damage. They want to chop up the branch so it can't. While the other memebers of the house tell them not to worry. Yet, they still persist in their own world of the branch is going to hurt them.
When all they really need to do is sit back and keep their mouth shut for awhile as a few storms go by to see that nothing is going to happen. But fear is a bitch and like to have the drivers' seat.

Besides all that, this really reminds me of a witch hunt.

Thanks for clarifying the direction of your comments, ruach. I appreciate it. I'm just expressing my opinion, and hardly saying anything more than what is already asked within the membership agreement (3.1, 3.8).

I also agree that it is better to duck and cover when the shit starts flying on a forum, and in most cases people will run out of faecal matter before long. In this case I think it has already started to subside. Thus...
