Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

pontalba said:
Seriously, its quite a good little story. Much more to it than flesh eating plants. Its more a tale of human survival. In fact the main male character rates as one of my favorite characters in fiction. Very understated.
Pontalba,
I have heard so much good about it that I really do have to give it a try. I'll check the library.
Meanwhile some sleep,
This is going to have to be an early night,
After an exciting day,
G'night, CU tmw,

Questions, question,

All aboard here with further ideas re a new Nabokov Author Forum to collect all our sifferent thoughts on any aspect of VN -- life, works, web links, articles, Freud, whatever -- that no longer match up to Lolita or Enchanter so easily.

And all thoughts welcome on whether we should start out with Pnin in such an author forum, or whether we should be brave and also start a Pnin Fiction Forum right off the bat.

Questions, questions,
Who has some answers/preferences/whims?

How about an "Everything Nabokov" thread now, and in a couple of days "Pnin", and then go from there. I thought "Ada" as some have started it already....? Your thoughts?

Pontalba,
I am entirely open to suggestion, and sort of fearless about the matter. If an extra thread gets opened and doesn't get used, well, so it happens but is not a catastrophe.

OTOH we have just seen how confusing it can be to have even two threads open. Pnin would make a third, but hopefully clearly focussed thread. General Nabokov would be for everything else, and I don't know how much of that there might be (afterlife, Freud, Vera, Letters, Strong Opinnions, Boyd bios, whatever). Maybe the real function of a General Nabokov (Lieutenant Nabokov?) thread would be to help a Pnin thread stay on topic, only on Pnin, but I would hate to get stuffy about that, especially if it fractured the possibility for congenial conversation.

After all, that is what we are having isn't it, a free-form conversation about Nabokov. We are not (I don't think) assiduously building a cleanly delineated and scholarly reference data base. So maybe we are doomed to overlaps and ought not to worry too much. Only the finicky may need to have a Pnin discussion all in one place.

The polar opposite would be to have only indivdual fiction threads (Lolita, Enchanter, Pnin, etc) and let the slight wanderings to other topics occur in those threads wherever they might. That way we would have fuzzy threads, but conversation would probably concentrate in which ever thread was most active at the moment, more or less the way it does now.

All of that makes me think there is probably no 'best' way to do it, and maybe in the best tradition we muddle through. It will always be that a book by or about Nabokov, is both a book (fit for its own thread), and also about or by Nabokov (and fit for a general Nabokov thread). That we'll never escape, given our general topic.

So, major agreed-upon book discussions in their own threads, and incidental discussions not yet of a size for their own thread, in a general Nabokov thread?

Pnin for its own thread, for example, and initial comments about Ada, for example, in the general Author thread until such time as interest and readership graduates up into supporting its own thread? The same way that Enchanter grew out of Lolita but Vera has not yet. Maybe that will work. And maybe that is the way it has to work.

So, before us we have the suggestion for a general Nabokov Author thread in the offing, and perhaps an almost immediate opening of a Pnin Fiction thread thereafter? (Or vice versa?) I have posts taking shape in mind that would at least support each of those threads.

Any seconds? Or other motions? Notions?

If not, I suggest it then be, by default, the opening of a general Nabokov thread this evening, and we then talk (in it) about opening a Pnin thread?

Any objections? Please feel free. Now's the time.

I think thats the most logical method.
Plus, I think its better to discuss all this in its own thread, "Everything Nabokov"? I don't think I could stand Generalissimo Nabokov!! And if he could, he'd probably be spinning in his grave as well! :D :D

I know, I know.....I am bad. Heh, heh.....:D

Ok, we're already in the Book of the Month with this thread.

And we have an Enchanter thread in fiction.

So...
General Book Discussion for a “Authors on Nabokov” thread.
Author Discussion for a “Everything Nabokov” thread, as proposed by pontalba :D
Book Search for “Is there a Nabokov book we haven't covered?” thread. ;)
Horror for “Oh my, I've just spent an entire months wages on Nabokov books”
Science Fiction and Fantasy, is a tough one, I'll think about it.... oh, the “Is Nabokov on TBF reminiscent of The Day of the Triffids?” thread.
Children's Fiction for the “Should Lolita have an age limit?” thread.
Crime, Thrillers and Mystery for the “just what did Nabokov mean when he said....” thread. :D
Comedy, I'll have to think about.... suggestions?
Non-fiction, for the “Stacey Schiff etc” thread
Comics and Graphic Novels for the “Should Lolita / Ada / Pnin be made into a comic?” thread.
Magazines, I'm really stuck.
Same with Writer's Block and Writer's Showcase.
General Chat for the “Nabokov influences every discussion, and here's why” thread.
Film and TV for the “Which Lolita film version is truer to the story?” thread.
Music, Hmmmm.
Testing Area, “How many posts can a single thread go up to?” thread.

Predators on the prowl methinks.

And you Nabokovians are bloomin marvelous if a little on the nutty side (and I say that in the nicest possible way;) ) Although the man himself has proved to be a worthy topic for musing. Actual threads based around our beloved have around 2811 posts with, wait for it..... a whopping 26,000 + hits. It must be love.:D

Are you comfortable with "Everything Nabokov" I am hoping;; title? new thread? whatever? I see it in there. And I don't want to break up this ol' gang of ours, just when we have it going good.

Heaven forbid:eek: We'd have to book you Nabokovians into a rehab clinic. You'd never make it through the withdrawal symptoms.

Breaca,
Those numbers are almost unbelievable. Well actually they are unbelievable except that there they are! Grandchildren though will never believe them. :(

Separately your opinion is being courted. Hope ya think Everything Nabokov is a step in the right direction, so we can put up some more nums and keep it rolling.

Yes, yes, I'm comfortable with anything Nabokov! Everything Nabokov, even better. :D

Sshh, don't let it get out... but I'm defintely stepping in the right direction - just little itty bitty baby steps. But I'm finding it difficult with each passing day not to leap up and grab all the Nabokov I can lay my hands on. And the temptation..... Ya see I have a friend whose bookshelves are chockablock with the man himself and so temptation is getting the better of me - the wicked woman. Adding titles to my wishlist as we speak.

Ah, Steffee, that's the spirit I like to see!
We'll try to do anything and everything!
Including a soda fountain with Lolita-style, tall ice-cream sundaes with lots of whipped cream and chocolate topping. :)
