Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

lol Peder. I decided that since it's always morning over there, I might as well join in. ;)

Ooh Pontalba, more new shelves?! Yikes lol ;)

I finally could not use those shelves I bought. too many holes in the wall etc, so I bought 5 three shelf bookcases that will fit on top of the desk/counter. I may have to order 2 more! LOL

Now really, really for tea!!

Or maybe (here's one far out!) just possibly in Pale Fire, with a very deep interpretation provided by Boyd in his companion book. But oh yess! The light bulb just went on!
It's Pippa! (Almost exactly)
And now you have to take it from there. /evil grin/.
Pontalba will probably find it in wikipedia, or some other obvious place hidden to all the rest of us. :D
Peder

Now who's the tease. Ms P you are a very bad influence and now Peder is at it too!! Like I said before... Two Ps in a pod:D

And knights in shining armour are not just for kids. I'll say one word (name) 'Jamie'. Ms P will understand I know;)

Thats very true, but look how when Prof. Hagen was going to all the department heads, and they were to a man against Pnin. Blind and mean people that they were!

Yes, but they didn't really get to know him and Pnin didn't really want to get to them either except for a well-chosen few. And it wouldn't surprise me if those that looked down upon Pnin don't get their come uppence somewhere else in Nabokovia - I'm sure VN paid them back;) And then again, I may just be waffling for the sake of waffling. Must need sustenance she says as the kitchen beckons - tea and toast I think.

lol Pontalba, go and get your tea then! :D :D

While I add up that 5 3-shelf bookcases equals 15 shelves, and you still might not have enough space

Steffee, yes thats right, and just think....the top of the bookcase can be used as a shelf as well... I am hoping to bring some stacks downstairs that have been hibernating.

Tea is steeping. Gotta wait :( for it.

Breaca and peanutbutter, and make it an (american) english muffin..LOL

Steffee you crack me up kiddo! LOL :D OK, I've had me tea and peanutbutter, I can live for a few more hours. I don't know how though, the darn bookcase people are going to deliver tomorrow instead! Woe is me. :( :( /sniff/boo hoo/ So now the room is completely torn up to accomodate the putting in of bookshelves...........I think I'm gonna cry. Sorta, kinda, not really.....;)

Oh no Pontalba, please don't cry!! Not on Nabokov anyway, especially not poor Lolita!!

Tomorrow will soon be here, and it means you get to read one of those lovely books instead... or maybe sort them alphabetically, or something lol

Failing that: post, post, post ;) :D

Wellll y'all.....I about fell out of my chair, but UPS just delivered my shelves! A day "Early"! Now to put them together! Ewww.....

Help....I've fallen and I can't get up......:p :D

I'm not the only one.................:p ;) Nah, at this time of day I'm switching to my bitter brew, er, I mean coffee.

Mmm, I wonder what wonders tomorrow will have in store;)

That's not coffee - you must be mistaken. Hey, Holmsie we need your investigative skills - coffee or soot:p And get Dr Watson too, we may need his medical assitance:p Just teasing - I'm sure your coffee tastes just right she says gulping or is that gagging:p

The Novel 100 by Daniel S. Burt

Re: Lolita
Nabokov described what followed the book's American release as "Hurricane Lolita." An immediate best-seller, Lolita became the first book since Gone With The Wind to sell 100,00 copies in its first three weeks.

There isn't too much regarding our Lolita that we haven't already heard, but I hadn't seen that figure (above). Not bad. :) And,
As Nabokov biographer Brian Boyd points out, "The whole of Lolita inverts the detective story pattern: we begin with a murderer, identified on the first page of the novel and have to guess at the victim: we face not a whodunit but a 'whocoppedit." Reaching the identity of Humbert's victim, the reader can relish the clues that were missed all along as well as the more compelling inquiry into the nature of the novel's criminal and the fate of the book's principal victim.
Of course we knew it was in a real way a detective story, but I don't think I'd read it put quite so plainly.

Where are the Baker Street Irregulars when needed? :D

Pontalba,
Um, they don't seem to be answering my messages either. I think they have all gotten wrapped up in getting ready to do Income Tax. Either that, or they are all out looking for their missing copy of Burt. :) I didn't know you had it!

Kidding aside, that book somehow sounds familiar, because I remember having seen the reviews on amazon when I just now checked. But what I found out, that I had never realized before, was that Lolita had made the cut, and that she was among (the author's estimate of) the 100 greatest novels of all time!. That's pretty exclusive company! And those publishing fiigures are new to me also, showing just how much of a hurricane she was. When I tried to find out how many other books had sold as many as the total 50 million that she has, I found out that publication figures are notoriously hard to come by, so the 100,000 figure is welcome new news also. Little did I realize that our girl was that famous! I only knew that she and VN had made virtually all lists for the 20th century, so yours are great finds and really put Lolita and Vladinir Nabokov in proper perspective!

Wow!
Peder

:D :D  The Amazonian Gremlins have been at it again! They actually manipulated my computer keyboard and ordered them! How Amazing. Stranger Than Fiction even!

Wait! Is that the Twilight Zone Music I hear in the background...:p

That does it. I'm buying stock in amazon.com

Hello all, it has been mentioned several times in this thread that Playboy came out with a great article about Lolita.
Lolita at 50
In 1955 Vladimir Nabokov was forced by timorous publishers to look to France to print the novel that has become one of the great works of American Literature. On its Golden Anniversary, A symposium of formidable writers - including A.S. Byatt, Dmitri Nabokov and Paul Theroux - reflects on the scandal and the achievement that is Lolita.
If you have not read it yet & would like to, private message me. ;) ;)
