Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

Libra6Poe,
Thanks for the kind offer. I have that issue, but I may be the only one here who does. So some others may be taking you up on your offer.
Thanks again,
Peder

Hello all, it has been mentioned several times in this thread that Playboy came out with a great article about Lolita.

If you have not read it yet & would like to, private message me. ;) ;)

Nononononono! No PM-ing allowed. We all want to hear. What, Libra6Poe? :) What's the offer? :)

I have 'em online  ... & can link ya. Although, I'm having problems with the 3rd, 5th, and 7th pages on photobucket... I'm working the kinks out.

Anytime ;)

Libra6Poe That was very kind of you, but please post them on the thread so everyone can read them. :)

Yeah. Nobody here gets to read anything that everybody else doesn't get to read. That means that all our hands are in plain sight all the time and all of our cards are on the table. No extra help and no PM-ing. It's hard enough keeping up with the whiz-kids around here. Right, guys? Right? Right? ;)

(It is a very kind offer, Libra6Poe. Not everybody will offer to share their Playboys with you. :D )

:sigh: Well, by doing that... am I not breaking some copyright law? That is my concern... which is why I just wanted to do it privately.

Otherwise, if you think it's okay, I don't mind posting it here.

Some of us are probably already being watched by the FBI because of the apparent lecherousnous of our googles. What the hey -- I say go for it. You can always plead innocent on the grounds that somebody called StillI told you it was okay. In writing, too. :D

Libra,
Unless the articles have already been posted publicly (and legally) on the Web, I would say that discretion is the better part of valor. After all, as you suggest, somebody does own the copyright -- probably Playboy, if not the original authors. So asking a mod sounds like a good idea. Hate to be a kiljoy, but I can well imagine what the conservative answer would be. :(

See, that's what I was thinking. :sigh: I wasn't comfortable doing it to begin with. Well, I've already PMed some mods to delete it for me.

Durn. Does this mean that the things I find on my New Yorker DVD archive collection are off limits here too? I've been doing some research on them.

Libra6Poe, I'd love to see what it was that you had to delete. That must have taken some time to do, too. As you can see, Prudence is not my middle name.

SFG, I can hear pontalba and Peder rummaging through their wallets for their charge cards all the way out here in California.

Still,
Now that the Law genie is out of the bottle, it may only take a couple more thousand posts to get her back in. :D However, in answer to your specific question re research, this might be an appropriate place to start:

Wikipedia - Plagiarism

It describes plagiarism and then points toward the related but different question of copyright infringement.

I'll venture that the rough answer to your question is "no, your own thoughts and conclusions are not off-limts and neither are limited excerpts, provided you observe the amenities of 'fair use' and proper attribution." But I am no lawyer -- which is important to note! -- just someone who is fairly familiar with research.

And, again, a mod would know better, in case of doubt. It's their forum. :)

Well, my offer still stands. If any of you have any interest in that article, just let me know. I'd be happy to PM you.

Or not, as the case may be, Peder! I'm not exactly sure about copyright infringement etc, Libra asked me to delete her post so I did. In case this is of any use, this is from the Membership Agreement:

3.3 The inclusion of excerpts from an article on another site is allowed as long as credit is given to the author of the article(s). Copying an entire article(s) from another site and pasting it into your forum post is not allowed, without the express permission of the owner of the copyrighted article. If you want users to read the full article provide a link back to the article instead.

Halo,
Thanks for keeping an ear tuned and for providing that excerpt (which we should have been able to find  )
It corresponds to the way I, and probably others, understand the matter. And the way we have been doing business here as far as I can recall.
So now we should all be able to feel on the side of the angels once again -- for at least a little bit anyway. :D
Thanks sincerely,
Peder
