Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

BTW Pontalba, StillILearn,
I love your new avatars -- all of them. :D. Have you both discovered an avatar mine someplace?
Peder

New toy. :D

I discovered I could use some of the pics in My Pictures. The jpg or some such initials.

The end echos another something in Lolita, the narrator of course, and the age similarities. Ohh, how can I put it so it doesn't constitute a spoiler...? Although one union is similar, it is different.

So similar, and yet so different.

:p
Pontalba, Similar and yet so different is a good way to put it, I think, for most similarities in the books. The girl for example might almost be Lo's twin sister, and yet so different. And so on.

And StillILearn, I see you are catching bad habits here. :D But some of the nicer bad habits to have.

There. I hope you two are happy.

(I'm not buying stacks of books, I'm saving the world!)

Not that I am anxious for you to read it or anything like that, but when do you think you'll finish it? :D :p
Fiddle de de!
Well, I'm buying stacks of books, its not my decade to save the world. :p :D

:D :D :D :D

ok y'all, its almost "Jack Bauer" time.....CUL

Yes, StillILearn,
By all means let us know!
The differences between the books would probably make up a complete list of the things we discussed so much here re Lolita. And would put those discussions in sharper perspective, I would think, when/if we revisited them. In the meantime my own Two Lolitas should show up and provide some grist for the mill here. If it isn't here tmw I 'll be surprised. It's only coming from 25 miles away.
I can already hear the thundering silence from Pontalba as Jack Bauer tears her away from some Nabokov book or other. :)
And for me it's time for my evening walk for the cup of decaf.

Yes, I agree it would be very interesting to analyze the differences between the 'prototype' and the final edition . Since Amazon goes by working days  I won't get my copy of Two Lolitas until Wednesday. So, you'll have a running start on me Peder. :)

Pontalba,
Right now there is no running going on anywhere around here.
I think I am going to try to get a sleeping start on you beginning about right now. Sorry to drop out early.

Neither book gives away anything about the other,

Oh, shame. Sometimes, I (lazily) think it would be a lot easier if we could invite Nabokov (after reincarnating him, of course) round for afternoon tea, and order him to disclose HH's true intentions. ;)

That's a much pleasanter idea than mine of exhuming his bones and putting him on the hot seat, so to speak. :D

A seance would also be acceptable to me. And Nabokov is definitely going to go on my "who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with" list, along with Jeremy Irons and Jonathan Franzen -- and along with all of you, of course!

I suppose Vera will manage to show up.

reactions sought re Enchanter thread

Especially after one wakes up, I think, StilliLearn. :) /still yawning/
However, forward with the sleepy thoughts

To any and all who come this way,
Now there are two of us here bursting with reactions to Nabokov's Enchanter, and a third known suspect soon to join on (right Still?). For those who might not know, it was an early novella (70 pp) with Nabokovs early thoughts (his "first throb") that much later blossomed into Lolita. The similarities and, even moreso, the differences are remarkable!

To get the ball rolling, I'll offer the thought that it might make sense to branch that discussion off into a new thread, since it is a separate book, and to have the discussion of all the numerous comparisons to Lolita take place there also, to have them in one place. I would imagine a free and open discussion, as here, without spoiler bars. And I would offer the thought of starting it after everyone has read the book who is going to.

So, seriously, how would we all like to do this? Lurkers, strangers, newbies, experts, mods definitely included.

As a separate thought for comment. Some (few?) of us it seems will also be reading the Two Lolitas book by Maar, regarding the controversy over an 'earlier German Lolita' than Nabokov's. That is a seaprate book also and could be discussed in another separate thread, but since it is definitely a 'Lolita' topic it might appropriately be discussed in this thread as part of the general discussion of 'Lolita,' Opinions and preferences also sought for this one. So far, I would imagine a considerably smaller discussion.

So, everyone, on with the thinking caps. Time for some serious work :) :) :)

Man-O-Man those posts can hatch while I hunt and peck! :) :) :)
I can see I have to get up earlier, especialy to beat British Time.
But, since we have a crowd, any thoughts?

I suppose the men go on a different island (and learn how to swim) but I would definitely not omit Galatea. :)

Agreed! I'm not sure about The Two Lolitas, as it is most definitely related to this Lolita, so maybe it could get confusing having two active Lolita threads. But The Enchanter is a separate book, and I have it good good authority (from you yourself) that it is unrelated to Lolita, and therefore I agree to the separate thread idea.
