Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

Perhaps just start a thread in General Discussion entitled "Nabokov, The Enchanter, and down the line whatever title we decided on with author's name first as above. Near the end of each thread, the participators could decide which Nabokov was to be dissected next.
Pontalba,
Love that title! And idea, too!
Let's run that up the flag pole and see how many salute! :D

PS: General Book Discussion? or General General Discussion?

Still,
Ya got me, as usual!
94210?
Something I don't watch?
Peder

I may have made it up.

Once upon a time wasn't there a TV program called -- oh, never mind -- you and I may as well live on Pluto, where, presumably, there are no TVs.

How about Reading Lolita in ___________ (fill in the blank.) :D

StillILearn,
Well, actually not so wide of the mark!
My TV is deliberately dark these days so that, presumably, I can do useful things.
But actually Beverly Hills did come to mind. Because of the show.
And also the possibility that I might actually have lived in that ZIP code once(Redlands CA)
From there to "Valley of the Dolls" which I might actually have read once. (Gassp!)
From there to googling.
And from there to deciding to just plain ask.
94210 might be a ZIP code on Pluto. :)
Need more coffee!

General Book Discussion

Nabokov, The Enchanter

GBD is right below the BOTM.
Pontalba,
That all sounds good to me. :)
I'm assuming we are waitng for Still, at least, and any others who want to be waited for? (Before the spoilers start flowing). Or do you suggest jumping right in to generate general interest and going from there?

Speaking just for me, and when a writer is as complicated as Nabokov, there is no such thing as a spoiler. It's generally all I can do to glean what I can with the help of the multitudes. In other words -- spoil away!

Well, StillI lets see what everyone else says, and plan for perhaps Friday or so?

What does everyone else think?

Still,That's very geneorus (and you modestly underrate yourself), and it might be true for Lolita. But Enchanter is a simpler read and a story that reads straight through the first time. I would absolutely refuse to tell you the ending, or any other parts of the characters or of the story. You have to enjoy the ohh's, and aah's, and gasp!'s that I guraantee you will have on your own, without the help of spoilers. I wouldn't want to diminish them in any way for you. For someone who has read Lolita, the book is stunning! For someone who hasn't read Lolita, it is perhaps merely amazing!
Now a station break to get some coffee. :)

Pontalba,I think, yes, we should allow at least a few revolutions of the Earth to allow reactions to come streaming in  :( and reading to catch up. Unless we want to start, and restrain ourselves until reading catches up.

I also think you should write the first welcoming post.

Peder As usual you are far more perceptive and logical than I am. :)
Pontalba,
And as usual you are very smoothe in your flattery when I merely offer a different glance at the same thing you are already saying.
But it's OK :D

You must be out of your mind! Its a good thing you put it in the smallest print, as to raise the least amount or ire from me!

So this weekend? Probably?

Pontalba,
Quite possibly, but I'm waiting for one more Earth revoution to hear from far flung outposts around the world, or near-in lurkers. I can't believe we are talking away here with absolutely no one listening. The quietest spot in the whole Universe if so.
What a ravoltin' development dis is! -- Jimmy Durante.

Somehow, I feel the need to blame myself.

I hope you are absolutely not serious!
En-Oh, En-Oh, En-Oh!
Absolutely not, En-Oh-Tee.
What on Earth for?
Posting the finest posts I have ever seen on a Forum, anywhere?
Contributing to a forum that has meant so much to all of us?
Being part of a forum that (I'll say it) holds a new world record for posts on Lolita, doubling the previous record that I know of! (About 525).
I don't know of a single thing that deserves blame, or requires blame.
Or maybe I miss your point.
But of all the ways one might feel about this forum, feeling that somehow it was wrong and someone deserves blame, is absolutely inconceivable to me!
Sorry to take such vociferous issue,
But blame is absolutely not a feeling one should take from this forum!
IMHO,
Peder
Now I'll count to 100 and calm down, in case that was intemperate. :)
And maybe take a walk and have more coffee.

All aboard!! Jumped ship? Never. But I must confess to a little lurking once in a while. But on the whole, whenever I've ventured out of my shell it's usually to find myself standing alone in threadland:( . And so I sadly turn away in hope that my timing will be a little better next time:D Besides, it's no fun being a wall-flower.

Look forward to getting my hands on The Enchanter. And have just acquired Reading Lolita in Tehran. I've enjoyed this thread immensely, even when standing under my lonely spot light - sniff, sniff. Are ya feelin sorry for me yet:p So all aboard the Nabokov Express....

Coffee and strudel are calling me - well it is tea time(ish).:D

StillILearn,
I hope you will allow me to apologize for blowing up in your face, esspeciallly when you were being conciliatiry. I should have counted to 100 first. then posted. So I am abjectly sorry for my behavior and hope that you can find it in yourself to forgive it, and maybe one day forget it.
However, being more temperate I would still say that this forum is a success by any standard, and that there is no blame to go around, least of all to you who have contributed the finest posts I have seen anywhere. I hope you can believe that much of what I said, at least.
I'm sincerely sorry,
Peder
