Vladimir Nabokov

To all,
Now that we have heard of Alla, I changed the quote below to move onto the next young lady in Glory, much the way author seemed to move from one to the other in his younger years. One, however, is inclined to say "Well, just wait until you meet Lolita!"

Breaca,
This novel seems, more than others IMO, to raise exactly the question of who in the novel resembles whom in real life. Why more than others of his novels? Perhaps because of the very great detail that VN lavishes upon the story in the early pages and which continues for quite a while. But also because in the introduction VN gives that summary of who's (like) who, and who isn't, which I think is the greatest number of hints that we have seen him give a reader. And he again comments on how misunderstood Russian emigres were by the western press. So some parts, at least, of what he writes we can recognize as definitely real. And Oh, BTW, he does not neglect a mention of Freud! :D
I'm now about half way and enjoying all the coffee and pastries. :) (As well as the book of course.)
Peder

I finally managed to start Glory last night, or was it early this morning? :) But I find it fascinating that VN gives so many comparables in his foreword. I think I will have to pull Strong Opinions out and do the comps as I go along. And you, Peder managed to pick the sentence I'd underlined as your tag line! LOL Now I have to keep looking. :D I noticed that VN has Martin's father a(nother) doctor. i.e. Timofey's father was a (different type of) doctor as well.

Plus the fact, as you say that he brings out the plight of the Russian emigres. Another example of the media scraping everyone with one sort of accent into one huge anonymous pile. :(

Ah well, back to sorting papers.....

Just a quick aside. It is sooo verra nice to have all my Nabokovia in One Place, on Two Shelves, Right to hand! Last night I found one (the Lolita screenplay actually) had migrated upstairs, and I brought that bad girl right down and put her in her rightful place! :D /contented sighing heard/

Pontalba,
With those new shelves of yours, I think you are quite possibly the envy of all of us here. I know that not a single one of my books is on a shelf! With no immediate prospects in sight either, and also no more space to start new stacks. So the book stacks slowly grow taller, like the trees they come from.
Glad you are finally into Glory. :)

To all,
Just checked "Alphabet in Colors" over on amazon. Sort of pricey for a thin book, but the colors may be well worth it. In combination with Strathern's "Nabokov in Ninety Minutes," though, the combination price doesn't sound so bad. But still it is two slender books.

In case anyone here buys by the pound
Peder

Durn. Now you made me want it.

SIL,
Those are beautiful looking letters. The descriptions hardly do them justice!
So, are you now hinting that the choice comes down to either shelves or alphabet? :D
Maybe if I cut back on the French crullers.....

Man! We do jazzy looking posts over here on Nabokov!
Congratulations SIL!
Peder

Actually, those would make pretty pictures for the library walls, wouldn't they? Or if one raised one's small children up with them on the walls of the nursery, I guess we'd maybe be raising up a crowd of synesthesiacs, if not of actual Nabokovians. It's a thought.

Nabokov in Ninety Minutes? Sounds fascinating!

SIL Those are beautiful! Such delicate colors, hmmmm raising Nabokovians....thats a wonderfully scary thought...!  :D

Just a small note to say that one of us has reached the two-thirds point in Glory.
Peder

I've been distracted a bit.....I'm not even 1/3 of the way thru.

But never fear, Nabokov will prevail eventually.

I think it is turning into a strange story, with characters quite unlike any we have seen so far. I can hardly wait for the discussion.
Peder

Ahem, sshhh, just taking a peek - er you were joking about the cattle prods - please say it was only a joke.

Ah, no green lights so I guess it's safe to come out;)

My guests are all visiting the land of nod so I'm sneaking around on the internet whilst listening to music (with headphones):D

Reading of Glory:eek: Yikes I've not got far at all. Not so easy when you have company:( But I shall endeavour to do my best and hope that I don't miss out on too much. In the meantime I shall content myself with little snippets and glimmers of enlightenment through this wonderful place;)

Bah Humbug, we all is jes sllllooooowwww.....

excluding a certain person that has posted certain progresses above. ;)

Breaca,
Sounds normal to me! :)
As for Glory, no problem! I'm sure I can remember it for a long time after I finish it, and before any discussion begins. I'm reading as slow as I can, though.
One chapter per cup,
Peder

Sale day again on the TBF!
Two posts for the price of one.
Oh happy day, calloo callay! :)
Peder

Sshh, they're asleep again. Still no progress to report.

Peder - one cup at a time? If you make the cups those little itsy bitsy cups then I just may finish Glory at the same time as y'all;)

Er, 'calloo callay' Is that a Nabokovian clue, or can it be found in a dictionary, ah ah, maybe I should google;)

Oh well, guess I'd better put my nightcap on and go to sleep. Ay?? Ohhh, you drink the nightcap, not wear it:p Slurp, there all done and now I'm off to 'sleep perchance to dream'.

Good night all:D

Breaca,
Well if they're a sleep again -- you make it sound like a nursery :) -- then you definitely don't want to shout out "calloo callay!"

I thought it came from the same place as the snicker-snack of the vorpal sword, there where it was slithy and the brillig toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe, and the frumious bandersnatch was definitely to be avoided. The hunting of the snark? Anyone?

As for the ccoffee, I'll start sipping slowly.
Peder
