Vladimir Nabokov

No idea, Pontalba. ;)

Great summary Peder! I really must catch up with this thread soon. I have found myself thinking of Lolita more and more often, so am considering rereading that, maybe after Glory.

ah-HAH!
Signs of life! I see the toes wiggling a little here, on a thread that had almost passed from memory.

Lucky you Pontalba with bright sunny tea-ey reading weather.
Here, we are having grim grey glum rainy grass-growing indoors Borders-browsing weather. But good, but good!

Good to see you too Steffee! It is hard to put that little girl completely out of mind isn't it? And I hope you will be sure to tell us what kind of book you find on reread. All agree that you will see and read a quite different story this time. In fact, Nabokov himself hoped so.

We could maybe sound a bugle and see how many more of the clan show up. And maybe some newcomers who never heard of this thread before. Can there be?!

However, down to business, and I don't mean monkey business. :)
It sounds as if there is some serious thinking going on here about perhaps starting to read Glory -- unless I overstate that considerably.
Considering that the finishing of Glory might be a long drawn out process (like the starting  ), I was thinking that maybe we could open a Glory thread when, say, about three or two of us have finished. It could be a place to collect slow and desultory random thoughts while others finished the book and then might lead to a full discussion when all felt like it.

I think I'll start rereading Glory, especially for connections out into the real life of Nabokov's times. At first it seems like a simple story (just as Pnin did on first reading) but, after continuing to think about it, the rest of the world that is in Glory becomes clearer and reveals more than just the story of love-struck Martin Edelweiss.

Anyway, I hope everyone's good intentions prove out and we get to share the ups and down of Martin's life and times.

Now for some serious book browsing! And breakfast.
Be back in a bit,
Charles

Enjoy your book-browsing and your breakfast then Peder!

And no, this thread would never, ever, be forgotten! Yes, I'm looking forward to encountering Humbert the Horrible et al. again. Even moreso than beginning Glory, unfortunately, although I would love to join you on that shiny new Glory-ous  thread you're talking of creating. I will, though. And for now, you have Pontalba and maybe Still, Breaca etc? I hope so.

Steffee Oh do hurry! Perhaps you could read Lolita and Glory in tandem?
SIL!
You're as bad as I am.... ...but I have gotten on my horse and am riding.....oh! I mean reading...heh, heh :D I mean after all Peder has pulled awaaayyy out front of us, and is even restarting the whole thing! We cannot allow that to happen! ;) :D
And I am sure that Breaca is coming along nicely. Sooooo come on folks. Lets Ride!
btw, Peder please leave a few books for us to buy! LOL

Pontalba,
Ya shudda axed me that sooner. :D
I went over there intending to eat, and that I did!
And I went over there intending to browse, and that I did!
But then I don't know what happened. I bought two, instead of browsing only the one I intended, and then I bought one other that I didn't even know existed, but it caught my eye. Details of the fiasco will be posted on Recently Purchased in a little bit.
I see everyone is putting on nice new Spring avatars. Nice new daisies Steffee. And one very sleek looking big watch cat Pontalba! Does she bite?
And Steffee. If you were a guy I could undersand getting waylaid by that little tart. But don't you really want to read about a smooth upright honest guy who would go to the ends of the Earth for you? But I guess you already have one of them. So go tumble with Humbert, see if I care /eyes welling up/.

Now to go confess on Recently Sinned, er Purchased,
Peder

Peder
She has been known to on occasion. :D However ordinarily she is quite well behaved. she said oh so verra innocently...

#1 meets #2, who is out walking a tiger on a leash.
#1 Does your tiger bite?
#2 Nope!
#1 /Reaches out to pat tiger, tiger bites hand/
Ouch! I thought you said your tiger didn't bite!
#2 Mine doesn't, but this is not my tiger.
/disappear/

Peder, you are such a joker! Can anybody guess who my avatar gal is?

Hint: Her daughter never dreamed that her creature would eventually star in movie comedies.

Pretty huge hint, I guess. :)

Around here, anyway. ;)

Stil,
I have been wondering and wondering, but haven't a clue. Except she looks like one of the celebrities they get to hold a book and recommend reading on posters during National Book Week. I hope that at least that much is correct. Because I definitely can't guess the daughter-creature combination either.

Oo. Fun. I don't want to make this too easy though. Do the words "The Modern Prometheus" ring a bell?

The picture is of the mother, not the daughter.;)

Stil,
You had me all the way. No idea! Even though I certainly know of her. But for not recognizing the picture, I can just hear my feminist daughter saying, in disgust, "Oh, Daddy" and shaking her head in dismay. And, no, I didn't know she was the mother of that daughter. How about that?!
So, a very significant avatar! At least in our family. :)
Peder

Before I click the links, I am going waaayyy out on a limb and saying Mary Shelleys Mother. But I have no idea why M.S. mother would have her picture taken anywhere, or anyhow.

Now to look. and be embarrassed.....

Yes I am officially embarrassed. Didn't know the connection.

Good-o SIL!

Er, SIL?
Might you, perhaps, kindly consider changing your avatar to something like Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck before you next pop quiz? Or even Minnie Mouse? We need a fightin' chance here. :D :D :D How about Sophia Loren?
Peder

Peder, hehe! Yup, new spring avatars, we're all fed up with the snow and the winds I guess. I most definitely do want to read about a nice fellow like that, you mean even nicer than Timofey? But Humbert the Horrible also has too much an attraction to resist. Hmmm.

Steffee,
It is impossible to be nicer than Timofey -- unless you challenge him to a croquet game, of course. Humbert? Ya gotta watch out! Ya might end up liking him more and then end up in some dinky motel room. But Martin? One really has to describe him as a cool cat. And woudn't you want to go boating with him on the Cam? And in addition you might end up hanging from a cliff face with him. That could be romantic. But ya hav ta hurry, there are already women clinging to him. Oh! And I almost forgot, he has money. He could probably drive over to pick you up. And he would definitely show you the town -- Cambridge, of course. :)
