What's the Point Of BAR/TBF Blog

What about you mehastings? What are your thoughts on the blogs?

Well, I think they are worth a shot. I don't think anything tremendous will be lost in giving them a try. Like Ronny, I think that they will simply die if they don't have enough appeal. The thing is, a lot of folks like to blog, and by doing it here, people are speaking to a group of people that they already enjoy socializing with.

As far as taking away from discussion, I don't think that will happen. I hope that members who post in depth book reviews in their blogs will think to cross post them in the bookshelves. That way discussions can still take place. Some folks had expressed interest in having a book log that they could edit, and this makes that possible. Other members like to share a bit about their personal lives, and this is a better outlet for folks to make announcements about themselves.

I hope that they will work well, but I think that raving against or in favor is premature at this point. Ask me again in a month or two, and I'll tell you how I really feel.

That was not the intention in the first place. Just a simple discussion...and some incite into what people might blog about, rather than post about in the forum.

I'm pretty sure you know that though.

I am hoping that it takes of, I'm curious to see what people do with their blogs. I'm not much good at keeping a blog myself, I lack discipline and things to say but I know a few members around here have a lot to say and will probably come up with really good blogs.

this is the last place I would ever again post any open, honest, informal, truthful, unguarded thoughts of mine.
Hiya stranger! Oh well, you could use the blog to post closed, dishonest, formal, deceitful, guarded thoughts, instead. ;)

The question is:
Will the forum lose something because the blogs exist?
For good or ill, that is something that only time will answer.

Is the blog thing set up so that only members with blogs can post comments?

Is there a way to make it so that any TBF/BAR member can post comments in blogs?

I was able to post a comment or two before I got my own blog. I think there's a way to block posters or keep the blog private, if one so wishes.

I believe it is not only blog specific, but also post specific. Members choose their comment options, just like they do on other blogging sites.

IMO, 'dear diary' blogs are pointless and uninteresting. You have to have a real subject, or else it's just babble.

Like:

This blog is about what I do every day to reduce carbon emissions and the progress I'm making.

This blog is about how I am growing grapes and making wine.

This blog is about the clothes and styling of people in my high school.

This blog is about my work creating new compounds in my graduate chemistry program.

Just blogging about whatever comes into your head is always going to be boring, and who do you think your audience is going to be? If the person sitting next to you in real life doesn't want to hear it, forget about it. In fact, I scanned the blogs here, and one person mentioned how bored they are. Ugh. How interesting is that?

I started to add a new entry but figured no one wanted to read my whine about my sick tummy, so I refrained.:p

Good for you, abc. Glad to hear it. But you could probably do an interesting blog on the realities and worries of homeschooling or knitting pornographic toys. Something like that.

Or I can really make people worry and write about the sweat shop I set up in the schoolroom, where I force the kids to knit pornographic toys, then write about their experiences for The Teaching Home Magazine. I wonder why they haven't called us about being on their cover?

Yes, good. I want to know how to make that little thingy look so realistic using only yarn.

And to think....some people hated the idea that I even started this thread. :D

Don't be smug. You don't always have to be so meta. Anyway.

I started a blog. Pour quoi? Because IIIIII have something IMPORTANT to SAY. What can it be? Something very wise and well thought out, perhaps. Or maybe something whimsical and assholian. Who can say?

Well....i am probably going to delete my blog. I like the idea of it but have no intention to post much about books as i dont have enough time in the day to read these days. All i ever read are journal articles and uni books. So il delete it....id may as well just not bother coming back to this forum. I joined to talk about books, but cirumstances have changed since i have joined so i dont read as much. Just no time.
I think it is a good idea. People here just dont seem as friendly and open as on other forums i go on. People join to talk about books or whatever subject but i always think it carries on to members becoming more acquainted. This blog can be used for book reviews if you wish but i think its good for people to get to know each other as best you can over the net and remain anon. Also i dont expect anyone to read my blog and be interested. Its for me to write in. Others to read if they want. If you dont then dont.

Aw, that is so sad, Catalyst. You know, lots and lots of people here don't read books. Haven't you noticed? The most lively discussions are about movies, not books. Don't worry about that. Plus, you have a lovely accent. If I could pick an accent to have, it would be Scottish. Can you say something very Scottish?

Also, I liked when you said WriterJohnB was annoying. He had way too many words unleashed on that occasion. As for blogs, most blogs don't get read at all. They just exist. Then again, most drawings don't get hung up for public view either. I think you're in a bad mood.

Moto wants to know what meta is. Moto, why can't you have a public conversation, fer chrissakes? It's a forum.

Meta means that you are always talking about the thing instead of being the thing or participating in the thing. It's like the way people here go on and on about how long it takes to read books and what they eat when the read and all that crud instead of talking about what's in the books. Have a blog, don't have a blog, comment on a blog, don't comment on a blog. But talking about whether other people should have blogs is meta.

The medium is not the message. The message is the message. The medium is the vessel, not the content. For all the verbiage on the typical forum, there is really not near enough content.

Haha thats because he was annoying :) Its a bit crap when you dont have time to read. I dont come here that often anyway, not enough for me to stop going. I was in a bad mood, stressed, bored with some people thinking they are the better than others and this place only generating discussions longer than 5 threads, when they are really arguements about nothing. I like people here, they speak their mind, which can be good if they are speaking about something worth while.

What do you want me to say.....theres a moose loose aboot ma hoose :p
