What's the Point Of BAR/TBF Blog

I just find it strange and depressing that your posts are always, in one way or another, about why you don't think this forum is any good. Such things are what you make them.

Life is not about what OTHER people are doing, whether it's some clip from the media or some other person's blog.

My attraction to TBF/BAR has always been the people, not the books. I've met quite a wide assortment of great people here.

I'm suggesting that on a book forum you talk about books.

Maybe you should suggest that Darren eliminate the entire non-book discussion section of the forum?

Define "always". With over 200 threads, and 4000+ posts I'm pretty sure the vast majority of things I've posted are in no way related to anything negative about this forum. In fact, I'd guess many of my posts helped lead to the addition of the Mature Discussion sub-forum.

But again...that's non-book related.

Life is not about what OTHER people are doing

This forum, or the internet for that matter are not "life".

I'm suggesting that on a book forum you talk about books.

That eliminates about 90% of the posts on this forum.

Interesting that nobody ever really questions this type of comment/joke.

My contribution to TBF/BAR represents roughly 2% of the total content here. If there's a problem with not enough "book" talk, I'm hardly the cause, or the solution to that issue.

Perhaps a better word would have been "recently". I can't help but feel that Novella has a point. Since the formation of your own forum, your participation has dropped off significantly, which, is understandable. However, whenever there is an opportunity you seem to be here ready and willing to talk about why this forum isn't as good as it was before. The difference is that you aren't posting a lot anymore, so these posts are all that newer members know about you. Perhaps you don't realize you are doing it. Perhaps you do. Either way, I think it makes it difficult for people to respect you and your opinion. I'm not going to go dig through here and look for examples unless you REALLY feel like I need to.

You are, however, right that the lack of actual book discussion doesn't have anything to do with you. I think there are a lot of reasons that book discussion is lacking here. I don't know how to improve things except to hope that some of our past prolific "book posters" will find the time or inclination to return.

I know that I would love to participate in book discussions more. Part of the problem is that I've been reading a lot of junk lately. I'm powering through as many romances, mysteries, series books and chick lit books as I can in an effort to downgrade my book collection. I don't feel the need to come in here and discuss how superbly stupid Carpe Demon was....although....maybe I should in case anyone else thinks about wasting $.50 on it at a yard sale. I also don't have as much time as I used to. I have a kid powering around my house eating lint balls and dog food whenever I turn my back. In fact, I have no idea why I started a blog here. I don't have time for that, and I'm not going to let my participation here drop anymore in order to write in it.

*takes a deep breath*

I've seen and been on a number of other book forums and they all have the same problem as this place does. The problem is that bibliophiles are like cats. They can't be hearded into one place at one time. We have a wide range of participating members. You have folks like me who need a key-stroke limiter on their keyboard:eek: , and then you have the likes of Lenny_Nero who pop in on occassion. We have more than a few who lurk mostly, and only post when they see something that really interests them. I've been surprised more than once by seeing someone post who I swear hasn't done so in the past year. They are here, we have our own "silent majority." They are finnicky and very picky.

Book discussions are often disjointed as people read works at different times. Our book of the month selections are also problematic in that people read at different paces and quite frankly, a thing called "life" sometimes gets in the way. Lastly, not every book can be taken over with a fine tooth comb. What happens in a scene is what happens in a scene, not every book has a rich character like our old Humbert. The blog option is a great way to remove some of the "chatty" threads and for folks to get to know one another better. It's a comfortable place for some "side" chatter to go on. Book discussion and reviews do occur there, but I don't believe that it has slowed the pace of the forum at all, quite the opposite in fact. It's a good incentive that this place offers, that quite frankly, others don't provide.

We will always have those who will leave. I do miss Peder, RobertFKennedy, Sitaram, and a few other folks. They were diverse in interests and posting style. I have a wide range of friends with a variety of talents. I think we should cultivate that here.

I do get very frustrated and combative here as to me-you are either a part of the solution, or a part of the problem. Sitting around and complaining does not solve the problem of the board. Like anything else, if you genuinely want a better board-participate!. We have lost some fine folks, but we also have some incredible stars here. We have our very own abecedarian, not to mention some interesting writers in WolfLarsen and manuscriptx. We also have a good crowd of youngsters who bring a "fresh" vibe to the board. Kudos to Claybugg, vespertillo, Valkyrieraven88, and a few others who keep this place from getting stale. Now if you dont' mind, this old curmudgeon is going to hit the rocker and take a nap for the rest of the afternoon.:D Rather than conduct periodic hand-wringing about how *bad* things are, perhaps we can focus on some of our strengths, of which, I can count more than a few.
