Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

Putting on lipstick indeed! Grrrr.....

I argued with myself [the only sure way not to lose the argument:) ] about buying another book. It didn't last long.........And then I ordered Small Island Its one of the reads for January. I've only read a bit, but I do enjoy the author's 'flow'. I like the characters I've met so far [the two wives]. As usual, it seems that its the husbands that muck up the works. :p  :D

If you were referring to it as 'light', I don't think that characterizes this book. Not Nabokov, but telling of the human condition. Not always a pretty sight.

Oh, I say there, Madam Co-Counsel.......hallooooo.......

StillI, pale, disheveled, alone in the silence of the courtroom restroom, presses a fistfull of cold water to her lips as she glances askance at the sticky that has been left on the mirror for her perusal. StillI sighs heavily -- she has so much she wants and needs to say right now. She wants to be there for her newfound friend and co-counsel, pontalba. StillI rips the sticky off the mirror; wincing with the pain of the truth that has been so simply and starkly revealed by it. Reeling in the general direction of the chrome-handled door, StillI is intent upon her mission; she must respond to Peder's briliant, albeit distorted, defense. StillI fumbles, dropping the sticky to the stained tile floor where it lies, staring innocently up at the ceiling, having spoken its irrefutable truth:

You guys need to lay off of Uncle Bert's egg-nogg.

ROTFALOLTIC and croaked right there!

btw, I think SFG75 just has sour grapes, because he didn't get enough of said eggnogg.:p :D

!

OMG! DROPPING DOWN DEAD FLAT THREE TIMES THERE WITH TOES NOT EVEN WIGGLING!

BRILLIANT! BRILLIANT! BRAVA! BRAVA!

StillILearn,

There is not a smiley big enough!

You don't have to add another word, although I dearly hope you will! And if you can top that ...... I dunno what to say! Maybe the whole forum will start shaking to the sound of applause and rhythmic feet stomping!

Mods take note: If there is a category for Brilliant Post of the Year, then there is the winner, by a knockout!

Everyone take note: Props to StillILearn!

Defense concedes,
And gladly so,
/Joins in wild applause/
Peder

StillI, hand on handle, wonders if she ought not to quit while she's ahead.

During her egg-nogg induced blackout, even though pontalba had put up such a stout defense, Peder has predictably had his evil way with the jury. Murmers of "panache" and "elan" have found their way beneath the restroom door. (How on earth did he manage to slip Vera, Bob Blake, and that juice guy past pontalba and into the jurybox?)

Straightening the seams on her last pair of stockings, licking the lipstick off her teeth, StillI determines to take the low road, which will lead her to the bar right down the street. It is only 7:15 AM, but her favorite Uncle Bert will be waiting there for her with open arms.

Pontalba,
All the bows should be in the direction of Her, with the capital aitch.
I think we should only tippy-toe and whisper softly when in her presence.

StillILearn Bloody Marvelous!

Did somebody say Bloody Mary? :) Want to join us at Bert's Place? :) You gave it a very good try, lady, but the cards were all stacked against ya from the start (never mind the fact that you were left hanging out to dry by your co-counsel.)

Peder

Any whispering and tippy-toe-ing would be hugely appreciated this morning.

You have made this fact overwhelmingly apparent by the luminosity of your defense of the horn-ed one. Too bad VN hisself couldn't have been here to witness it. I'll bet you could have successfuly defended Vile-E-Coyote, had he survived all the gunfire.

StillILearn, Pontalba,
Bert's Place sounds perfect! Just as long as a good time was and is had by all. Set 'em up, Bert! :D
'N when Bert closes up, there's a nice little place called Dorito's around the corner. :)

And speaking of 'all,' are we all there are at this point? Seems mighty quiet around here for a huge celebration. Or maybe, speaking of celebration, an early start at Year End celebrations explains the quietude?

So just where did we leave the loose end of that thread we were yanking on anyway?
Anyone holding onto it? Who has a thought? An idea? A comment?
Anyone still reading? Anyone still listening?
Or are we'uns all tuckered out?
Peder

Loose Ends?? Which ones?? Ya mean like which tree shall we hang HH by......a cypress or one of the Dueling Oaks in the park??

Actually didn't we all win? A good time was had by all, a good ole rip roaring debate on the true nature of quilt.......um I mean guilt. :D

Now as far as Bert's and Dorito's............well now I know a place waaayyy down in de bayouuuu.....dere.....;) Julio's actually......

Actually, I know of a couple of people who are still reading The Novel for the first time, and I'm hoping that they'll refuel the fire here sometime soon.

I've ordered a couple more Nabokovs from amazon and also it's about time to start reading The Blind Assassin for the next BOTM session.

Who's game for this new book? :)

StillILearn, Next month (January) has two selections. One being Small Island and I think Palindrome. The Blind Assassin is scheduled for February.

I am presently reading Small Island and am enjoying it. I don't care for Margaret Atwood's other books, so I don't think I'll be participating in that one.

But I know for a fact that Breaca is still reading Lolita, and I believe I saw that someone else has it listed on the top of their posts. Ruby I think. Hopefully more, and maybe they will contribute. I know there is a lot more meat on those bones. :)

Ahhhh. Thank you, pontalba. Sometimes I have trouble with details.

I think you're right though, there is more meat on them bones! ;)

Hopefully indeed more will contribute to keep the fire going as they feel moved. If it does get quiet around here, I know there will be one ghost, at least, checking in to see what's up any time this forum bumps up to New Posts.

As for more meat on the bones, definitely true!

I think it was Steffee, 'way up above, who commented on the 'two detectives' and the (surprising) length that the forum was running. IMO the length has rather more to do with Nabokov and rather less to do with the two detectives. Plus I have come across a paragraph by Brian Boyd which seems to endorse that as more than just my opinion. He's speaking mainly about Pale Fire but I think us Lolita folks can appreciate the truth of what he says also.

"Reveling in the find after find that she had made -- or thought she had made -- in Pale Fire, Mary McCarthy ended her review by hailing it 'one of the very great works of art of this century.' Most keen readers of Nabokov concur, happily singling out Pale Fire as his highest achievement. But it proves a good deal harder for them to interpret than to evaluate the novel. Whereas Lolita sparks moral debate especially among those who have never read it, Pale Fire has ignited a critical controversy among those who have read and reread it that burns more firecely every year."

Nabokov's works challenge the reader and almost always lead to great (and lengthy) discussions whenever they are subjects of a forum. This one was no exception!

And it must be added that there is no shortage of critical opinion that regards Lolita also as one of the great works, and its author as one of the great authors, of the twentieth century. And I hope that now maybe some more members of this forum are inclined to see why that is so and to be inclined in that direction.

IMO it has been a great forum and I hope it has provided lots of challenging enjoyment for everybody,
Peder

I can't remember when I've had so much fun! I know I'll be haunting the place like the bartender haunting his old bar in The Shining. ;)

Even as I as a Nabokov neophyte see that the more one reads Nabokov, the more there is to see and delve into. I strongly suspect that one could read his novels at least once a year and come up with something new or a new slant every time. The list of authors that meet that criteria is not an extremely long one. I know, I know, you can come up with at least 20, but thats not that many in the scheme of things is it? :)

I hope this is only the first of Nabokov monthly excursions.;)

I have to say that I have obsessively checked this forum daily to see who had posted what new insight or comment.

Neat-o
