Vladimir Nabokov: Lolita

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the previous work have a hotel scene where Humbert and another man run into one another while having their *nymphs* beside them? Just something that was mentioned in the pdf document.

Not exactly. On p.68 there is an encounter, but not in any way similar to the encounter with Quilty in Lolita. But there are corresponding points.

SFG
Not that I recall.
The only thing that would come close, I think, would be Humbert/Lolita after the play seeing Quilty/Darkbloom in the crowd, with Lolita trying to convince Humbert that he has their names backwards -- 'Clare' being Darkbloom, to throw Humbert off the scent. And that is after Lolita and Q have concocted their plan to 'free' her from humbert.

(pontalba has probably already answered, while I type :( )

SFG I thought you meant was there a similar experience in The Enchanter, it was that page and book I was referring to in my last post.

Pontalba, SFG,
Yes, i thought that was what SFG meant also, and I think p68 pointed out by you Pontalba is indeed an encounter the dissertation might have been referring to. Totally different, yes, but looking at it now, certain analogies could be drawn. What was the point in the dissertation?

The point of mentioning Enchanting was that it was an earlier version of Lolita, and that the books are earily similar intentionally. The overall point is that Lolita led to films about it, which in turn, created a culture in society whereby people began to sexualize our youth as being things that one *wanted* Hence the mentioning of Brittney Spears. Of course, Humbert would've disapproved of Brittney after she reached the age of 14 or so-widening hips and all.

I saw the original Lolita when it came out, but didn't remember much of it except it was a bit creepy to me as a 12 year old. The satire and layers went right over my head. It was shocking to some extent, but I hardly think it was the cast upon which free sex and rock and roll was based on, by any stretch of the imagination. And as far as creating the "wanting" of the youth, as Humbert so ablely pointed out, thats as old as the pyramids.

I really wish I could get my pdf reader to read that document but it refuses to open it. So, battling an adversary in the dark, I'll offer a thought that far from starting the trend toward more open sexuality in society, Lolita benefitted from a trend that was already started. Otherwise it could never have been published in the first place. Or to put it another way, if 'society' didn't want it, then it certainly had ample means to suppress it. And the publishers knew it, because they did fear going to jail if they published. Unless the student wishes to claim that some wildly liberal prosecutor abused the priveleges of his office and actually approved an illegal pornographic work. A conspiracy theory of sorts. I really wish I could get at that article to see how the cause and effect reasoning goes, and especially what the supporting evidence is.

Speaking of pyramids, does anyone know how young Cleopatra was when Julius Ceasar and Mark Antony were interested? And what their ages were?
That was a surprise quiz!

Cleo was in her early 20's, and Julie Baby was in early to mid 50's. Julius Caesar is one of my favorites. Never saw too much in Antony. Pipsqueak. IMHO

She enters... sits quietly under spotlight... and begins to jibber jabber....

Er, pyramidical quizical... I believe Julius C would have been 52ish when he met Cleo - Cleo would have been 21. When the famous lovers met, Mark Antony would have been 42 and Cleo 28. Couldn't quite get myself to write in blood or put chisel into stone...

And I'm just amazed at how wonderful life is. Phah to the Tooth Fairy I say. I have book fairies. Every now and again books arrive, out of the blue, in my mailbox from UK fairy corporation. And then there's a rather fiesty little fairy who sometimes leaves books on my favourite chair whenever I pay her a visit.:D And so I can now put my hands up in the air and shout 'yay' cos I gotta copy of The Enchanter. So that's tomorrow sorted out:cool:

SIL Vera is supposedly next on my list, but I did get a package from Amazon this evening.....no, no, nooo, stick to one author at the time!!

Breaca LOL :D Is that similar to the Library Police? But goodie, goodie!

So, when do we start???

Mmm library police? My little fairies let me keep my books;)

And yes, when do we start - but do bear in mind I need to read MY (oh such a sweet word) copy of The Enchanter. Not that that should restrict debate - not here of all places.

Are we going to a separate thread/area for The Enchanter or letting it go as a natural progression to this esteemed thread?
