pontalba said:Well.....SIL...its like this.....my TBR stacks are pretty high.
But right now I am on the V/VN kick, so mostly all I'm reading is Casebook and Vera. Actively that is....I'm not counting the bookmarked ones.
Ms. Pifer, gotta love it! After Vera I was thinking about Sebastian Knight. Or maybe during even.
Now as it turns out the gendarme had confused two similar names. So Arthur proceeded to go back to the room, got lost, knocked on the wrong door etc. There was a knock at the door. He gave a violent start (hurriedly withdrawing his hand from her belt without having figured out how to unhook it). "Wake up, get off," he said, giving her a quick shake. She opened her vacant eyes wide and slithered down over the hummock of his knee. "Come in," he said. The old fellow peeked in and announced that the gentleman was wanted downstairs, that there was somebody from the police station to see him................"What's the matter?" he asked sharply upon reaching the entrance hall and seeing an already restive gendarme, a swarthy giant with a cretin's eyes and chin.
....blessed intuition broke our embrace--a split second before a highway patrol car drew up alongside. Florid and beetle-browed, its driver stared at me: "Happen to see a blue sedan, same make as yours, pass you before the junction?" "Why, no." "We didn't," said Lo, eagerly leaning across me, her innocent hand on my legs, "but are you sure it was blue, because---" The cop (what shadow of us was he after?) gave the little colleen his best smile and went into a U-turn. We drove on.

pontalba said:Found it! In both The Enchanter and Lolita there is an incident with a policeman looking for someone that is similar to Arthur and HH...
The Enchanter p.65-66 (this takes place in the hotel right after he has been cuddling the girl while she was mostly asleep:
Now as it turns out the gendarme had confused two similar names. So Arthur proceeded to go back to the room, got lost, knocked on the wrong door etc.
Now Lolita p.113 (this is when HH and Lo were on the way to the Enchanted Hunters hotel):
Both incidents were on the way to the planned fulfillment of the pervert's dream. Both policemen were, well lets say "appearance challenged" . Both policemen were looking for, shall we say the doppleganger?
Same Difference eh?

Pontalbba, pontalba said:Peder The only reason I mentioned Sebastian Knight was because isn't that the one that Clare is supposed to be so similar to Vera? Believe me, I don't want any political discussion! I think The Enchanter and Vera can keep us going for awhile...
You are right, I bought The Stories of VN just the other week.
Go look at response over there. Since it is Lolita connected, I thought it should go there?
StillILearn said:Well, I've got 'em both right here, only if you find something good in Pifer's Casebook, please give me a page number because I'm not kidding, I'll go blind if I try to read it all.

Actually StillILearn, I did start out the day dedicating my first cup of coffee to you, and here are the results.
The first chapter in Pifer's Casebook is by Nomi Tamir-Ghez, "The Art of Persuasion in Lolita," and having said that much it looks like I should put it over in the BOTM Lolita thread, where it will appear a little later than post 1500.
So, cu there

If you would like read-a-long company from here, please make it anything but the political one. Pretty please.
But if there is a ground swell, .....well.....then.....
Can I split my vote for the political one:

Still,StillILearn said:Peder, I'm laughing! KPED? More double meanings? Thanks for the help with Pifer. Did you all get the one with the purple cover and the nymphet gazing at her face in the hand mirror?
Still,StillILearn said:I'll bet both of you have already read Speak, Memory. Amazon insists that I bought a copy on December 28, 2005, but my own memory doesn't go back that far!
I think it may be a good one to read after Vera. Help! What do you suggest?
I will try to minimize my own political asides. I said try.
