Pontalba,
Good. /big smiley/
I hope you Find Time to read it.
Peder

How many books are all you guys reading at once anyhow?

I got my Ellen Pifer book today and the print is this big.

We're all going to be in the Poor House with our white-tipped canes!

Well.....SIL...its like this.....my TBR stacks are pretty high.

But right now I am on the V/VN kick, so mostly all I'm reading is Casebook and Vera. Actively that is....I'm not counting the bookmarked ones. ;)

Ms. Pifer, gotta love it! :) After Vera I was thinking about Sebastian Knight. Or maybe during even. :D

Well, I've got 'em both right here, only if you find something good in Pifer's Casebook, please give me a page number because I'm not kidding, I'll go blind if I try to read it all.

As for Vera - bring 'er on! :D

My present opinion is that Vera was trying to make herself quite indispensible to VN. Which she did. I love the pictures.

Did anybody else see the photo and story, The Word, by and of Nabokov in the December 26, 2005 - January 2, 2006 New Yorker? On page 76?

Found it! In both The Enchanter and Lolita there is an incident with a policeman looking for someone that is similar to Arthur and HH...
The Enchanter p.65-66 (this takes place in the hotel right after he has been cuddling the girl while she was mostly asleep:
There was a knock at the door. He gave a violent start (hurriedly withdrawing his hand from her belt without having figured out how to unhook it). "Wake up, get off," he said, giving her a quick shake. She opened her vacant eyes wide and slithered down over the hummock of his knee. "Come in," he said. The old fellow peeked in and announced that the gentleman was wanted downstairs, that there was somebody from the police station to see him................"What's the matter?" he asked sharply upon reaching the entrance hall and seeing an already restive gendarme, a swarthy giant with a cretin's eyes and chin.
Now as it turns out the gendarme had confused two similar names. So Arthur proceeded to go back to the room, got lost, knocked on the wrong door etc.

Now Lolita p.113 (this is when HH and Lo were on the way to the Enchanted Hunters hotel):
....blessed intuition broke our embrace--a split second before a highway patrol car drew up alongside. Florid and beetle-browed, its driver stared at me: "Happen to see a blue sedan, same make as yours, pass you before the junction?" "Why, no." "We didn't," said Lo, eagerly leaning across me, her innocent hand on my legs, "but are you sure it was blue, because---" The cop (what shadow of us was he after?) gave the little colleen his best smile and went into a U-turn. We drove on.

Both incidents were on the way to the planned fulfillment of the pervert's dream. Both policemen were, well lets say "appearance challenged" :) . Both policemen were looking for, shall we say the doppleganger?

Same Difference eh?

pontalba, you are getting to be way beyond amateur status here. :D

Well SIL, I have to try to keep up with you guys! ;) :D
Thanks so much for posting that beautiful short story. I suppose it would qualify as a short, short story. And no, I'd not seen it.

You know the more I think about, the more instances between the two books that are the same, but with a twist. In a way, it all goes back to the one story bit doesn't it.

Vera was an amazing woman to say the least. I wish I had more chance to just read, read, read....... If she'd not met VN, she would have been a fine writer herself, but neither of them would have seperately reached the heights the combo were able to reach. So maybe it wasn't so bad that she was not able to aquire the higher education her sisters received.

And talk about small print! Oy!:D

That definitely qualifies you for the Silver Eagle-Eyed Book Scout Badge! :)
For the Gold Badge I think you are going to have to look at "A Nursery Tale" among his Stories and see what you see of Lolita/Lolita in there. If you are willing, and if you have the Stories, as I think you said you did. (Remember, anything you say can be held against you, especially a book. ) If you don't have his stories, well, then you automatically have a Premier Maize Badge for overall achievement! :)

But, to your question, yes important details are definitely and recognizably there, and even general ideas, which is why I am so surprised that it sounds like such a very different story altogether to me. I guess the question is what makes 'different?' Or maybe I am just easily satisfied.

And possibly I am not awake yet, duh

Now you're clickin'! :)
That's amazing, and definitely for slow reread when I am more awake.
And will also definitely work up some Pifer places for you to take a look at.

Pontalba,
If you would like read-a-long company from here, please make it anything but the political one. Pretty please. :)
But if there is a ground swell, .....well.....then.....
Can I split my vote for the political one: :( :( :)
Peder

Peder The only reason I mentioned Sebastian Knight was because isn't that the one that Clare is supposed to be so similar to Vera? Believe me, I don't want any political discussion! I think The Enchanter and Vera can keep us going for awhile...

You are right, I bought The Stories of VN just the other week.
Go look at response over there. Since it is Lolita connected, I thought it should go there?

Pontalbba,
Clarity returns alsowly after some sleep and a cup of coffee. I think the syntax center of my brain wasn't working earlier this morning as I look at what I wrote. :(

SK is just here to my left, so it can't be the political one. I see from the back cover it is a detective one -- so double fine by me! When and if.

No problem on answer being over there; sounds like the right place. My question came up over here only by connection with the previous thought.

The sun is up; all is right with the world; so may it continue to spin as it has been doing. :)

CUL,
Peder

And this next song from the KPED Bandstand goes winging out through the airwaves to SIL in beautiful faraway Califonia....

Actually StillILearn, I did start out the day dedicating my first cup of coffee to you, and here are the results.

The first chapter in Pifer's Casebook is by Nomi Tamir-Ghez, "The Art of Persuasion in Lolita," and having said that much it looks like I should put it over in the BOTM Lolita thread, where it will appear a little later than post 1500.

So, cu there

Peder, I'm laughing! KPED? More double meanings? Thanks for the help with Pifer. Did you all get the one with the purple cover and the nymphet gazing at her face in the hand mirror?

Read-a-longs are nice!

I'll bet both of you have already read Speak, Memory. Amazon insists that I bought a copy on December 28, 2005, but my own memory doesn't go back that far!

I think it may be a good one to read after Vera. Help! What do you suggest?

I will try to minimize my own political asides. I said try. ;)

Still,
Yes! And I smile every time I look at it! I don't know whether it captures the nymphet of my, er Humbert's dreams or not, but it sure is intriguing to compare it to the book's description (such as we imagine it). Leggy isn't she? But actually she looks a little strange to me. I guess I wonder whether the real Lo was that self-absorbed with her looks, or anything else.

Still,
No, I haven't finished it. My bookmark is about 1/4 way through, as I have been noodling with Pifer, Maar, Nabokov Stories, and comparing Enchanter and Lolita.
Speak Memory is a little dry, but fascinating nevertheless. It is totally like being in a complete time and space warp.
