Its raining a bit here now. Just a light but steady rain.
Pontalba,
Good weather for reading a book, :)
Hope it stays that way and nothing worse.

BTW, I have just started Glory.
Happily, it reads exactly like the wonderful Nabokov of Pnin.
Which strikes me as impressive considering how much earlier it is.
But we can talk about that later. :)

No surprises there - after all our VN is a genious - even in his early days. And I must get started on Glory myself. Tried yesterday but the Book Fairy waved her magic wand and lo and behold I found myself standing in the middle of a book shop. Oh the temptation of it all. At this rate I'll be joining Ms P on the quest of finding that elusive bookshelf that, no matter how hard you try, always has room for just one more.:D

Breaca,
I hope those shelves get filled immediately because, if there is any empty space left over, I have a feeling ...........
But, more shelf space than books? Nah! Never happen! :D

You know its funny, while going over Lolita again in search of The Moth  , btw, I think you are right!, it struck me that Lolita does have a different twang about it. The cadence for want of a better word is different to Pnin but at the same time similar to but more intense than The Enchanter. I can't wait to start Glory. I haven't had much chance to read yesterday or today, but will get busy and finish Remains of the Day (traitor that I am), and start Glory. I did love the intro.

Nooo Pontalba,
Not making fun really, :(
Just wryly commenting that there is never enough shelf space for the books we have. Or if there is, then the inevitable happens....... For any of us, I think, but certainly for me. We used to have two long shelves along one end of a room. Then we had built-in bookshelves completely covering both adjacent walls of a room. Neither was ever enough. How two shelves of books turned into two walls of books is completely beyond me, but they did. So I have a certain belief, bred of experience, about shelves and books.
But I wish you every success,
Really,
peder

Shucks Peder I knew verra well you were kidding, I was just being silly. Ah, now built-ins are my dream!! /sigh/ I think books are like coat hangers.....ya never know exactly where so many of them came from.  :D

The Literary 100....Vladimir Nabokov by Daniel S. Burt

We've spoken in the pst about Nabokov's special treatment of "time" and the veracity of his narrators. I found this quote interesting, hope you do...
"I confess I do not believe in time," Nabokov declared. "I like to fold my magic carpet, after use, in such a way as to superimpose one part of the pattern upon another." It is also difficult to identify Nabokov's shaping hand and intentions in his fiction. Since most of his novels come filtered through the consciousness of limited and unreliable narrators. Puzzles, which fascinated him, set the shape of many of his novels, with hints and clues detected through an elaborate pattern of motifs and allusions.

All the better for keeping his readers 'fascinated'. Pure magic:D

Y'all may have already seen this photo, but I think it may explain why he was so popular with the girls. And, of course, behind that pretty face lurked an incomparable imagination and the mind of a genius.

I wonder what his voice was like. If he had a wonderful voice, then all was certainly lost.

I have up and ordered Glory. :)

Yay! :D :D

He was beautiful wasn't he. Statement, not question :). /sigh/
I wonder if anyone anywhere has a recording of his voice......?

but you must admit the difficulty of living with somelike that had to be balanced by something.....

But wait until you hear his intonation. Did you click? ;) He says:

No. I could not.
In verra clipped tones, as pontalba would say. :D

(Apparently John Ubdike compared Vera to " .. the leewd and bitchy Ada.")

Also you get to hear him pronounce his own name. This is good stuff!

SIL That is sooo verra marvelous! Thanks for posting those links! I did not imagine that there would be something so neat available!

Clipped is the word. Love the intonation and accent!

To quote someone.......utterly fantastic!

But I don't see Montgomery Clift as Nabokov. btw, SIL, that is the pronunciation that Jeremy Irons used as well...............
